Engine Hoist Refresh...on a budget

So I bought a rather large engine hoist on craigslist for $25 bucks a year ago sight unseen. Turns out its a US made (SC) Hawke...I think its their 3 ton model. To top it off, there was a Snap-On A238 leveler included!

Rusty, ugly, but definitely heavy duty.

Needed a refresh so I wire-wheeled it, flap disc, then rolled on some Royal-Blue Rustoleum to "kinda" match my SO royal blue roll cabs..which will be showing up on here at a later date.

After a little work: you can tell that the wire wheel wasn't cutting it so went for a flap disc

Looks a 1000x times better, its American steel, huge, and cost me less than half of a sketchy HF special, and probably twice the capacity.

Restoring the SO A238 is on the agenda.

Don't forget the bottom of the lift arm and inside the ends of the box tubing. Looks good!

Bottom of lift arm : thats the jack you are seeing there...

Inside of the box tubing: you have me on that one. Explanation/excuse: Better to use the brushes on the smooth surfaces first, then the rough/dirty. combine that with a major theft problem here and I decided to do the outsides and assemble asap so I could move it into the back yard. I took care of the tubes today

SHHHH! You weren't supposed to notice that. Notice the two possible mounting locations on the boom?- I have to figure out what size/ length ram to put in it. It had a very small cylinder on it when I bought it....so I borrowed my buddy's HF 8ton for fitment / photos. I still have to spend money on a ram...suggestions?

Kinda hard to miss that HF Orange. BTW my HF hoist is rated for the same capacity as this US made one. I do have a homemade hoist that was built strong enough (and tall enough) to pluck C-series Cummins engines. I can't remember where I got the ram on that one.

Well to be honest, I don't actually know which model it is. So for I all I know it could be a 375Ton hoist which is way more than your HF...help me ID this thing people!

So technically I guess all I have as far is ******* contest, is the price I paid, and measuring max lift height...I'll be right back folks!

The two holes, in my experience changes the working height/capacity for different applications.

I have a Continental engine hoist its made in the same Town and State as yours the PO box is different. It has a sticker on the boom that say's #4000 capacity.I bought it 25 years ago from a door to door equipment salesman he had a truck load of stuff he would sell and go back and get more and start over. He had a engine stand,engine hoist, a shop press and a horizontal metal cutting band saw. The hydraulic cylinder on mine is Chinese made so your right on with the Harbor Freight one. Hope this helps out. Your extendable mast is in upside down the hook is on a short chain held in with a bolt in it's end.

What grit and brand of flap disc? I'm facing a similar job with a utility trailer frame and am running into the same problem with a wire wheel not quite cutting it.

Sorry, didn't mean to turn it into a ******* contest. I woulda done the same thing you did if I had run across a setup like this when I needed a hoist. Nice work.

The blue and the orange go well together. Looks very nice. I have a problem with kleptos stealing my stuff as well. Installed a bunch of cameras, and made a few house "visits". That seems to have stopped it... for now.

I had since put the bolt / chain / hook (d-ring) back on, but if its upside down I'll slide it out and flip it. I assumed it was to be this direction because previous owner had it oriented the same. Have any sales brochures or pictures of this lift ..online content welcome too?

I once did a trailer with wire on a 9in grinder...took forever.
Used both 40, and 80 grit. Both worked equally well since it was a rough cut job, not sheet metal


Grinder: 9 inch...and it did not feel like overkill at all.
Brand: Diablo : Steel Demon.

Cameras: I'm with you on this. Just got some camera's last week (used good quality and free!)....now I have to get with my tech-savvy brother to buy a recording device.



Oh for anybody who can help identify: Boom is 6.5 ft full extension. Pivot bolt is 5.5 ft tall. And max safe lifting height is 9 feet. The legs to NOT fold.

Really nice job.
As for the ram if you have a compressor I would recommend a air/hydraulic ram as they save heaps of pumping.

Read my mind. Only about $20 difference, I love mine.

In fact, get the air/hydraulic even if you don't have a compressor. It works manually as well, and you will probably get a compressor some day.
