Engine hoist storage?

This may sound a bit silly, but where do you put your engine hoist when you dont need it? Its a huge tool that you have to have when you need it, but takes up a ton of space any other time.

I'm putting my garage back together and just cant find a good spot. I used to keep it in the shed out back, but thats a PITA too. I'm considering just selling it and renting one when needed- dont really want to though.

What do you do with yours? Any use for it?

I have a folding one so it takes a little less space. I **** it in front of the water heater in my garage

I have one that the bottom legs come out for storage. I keep it jammed in the corner with a four foot ladder on it on one side and my creeper on the other side.
It's usually in my way with and engine on it though.

Mine folds up too, but my bandsaw is where I was going to put it. Its just like half my ****-waste of space most of the time, but the perfect tool when you need it.

Mines folded up and stored outside in front of the shop with a bucket over it to protect the lifting ram from water damage. The reason for the outside storage is I rarely use it and the shop has limited floor space and the shed is cram packed.

My shop gets rearranged a few times a year depending on the current concentration of projects (woodworking, boat building, cars, etc) but the one constant is the south wall. The engine hoist is folded up and sits below the window beside the overly heavy, oilfield built steel shelving unit!

I loosen a few bolts and put it in the basement storage with other rarely used tools. For as often as it gets used taking 20 minutes to move it is worth way more than the garage space it would take up.

It was stored in a good buddies barn for several years after he had to use it. If you don't have the extra space maybe "loan" yours to a buddy in case he needs it so it's still close in case you need it.

Try to constantly loan it out, it worked pretty good for me almost 5 years. Just got it back last summer for the latest 68 Camaro project.
I should be ready to loan it out again next summer, hopefully.

I have two... On one, the legs are removed and stored in an upright position in the provided brackets.... On the second unit they fold... They are neatly lined up in the shop with other equipment.

If you don't have one that folds up you have a couple of,options.

One
If you don't use it much then take it apart and you can strap,it,to,the wall so,it will take very little space.

If you use it semi regularly, then tip it on its back and it will take up half the space

I had a problem when I needed a crane, several problems, actually.

I hardly have room for another piece of equipment that would require

X amount of floor space in the shop. I needed a crane that was long

enough to pick up a C350 out of a GMC P-30 with a Grumman body

(basic SWAT type truck, or bakery truck, if you will) which required a

longer reach than most cranes will accomodate. (engine comes out the

side door) I ended up building my own little big crane.

After looking at all the ones that were available to look at

for ideas. What I ended up with was a base that is a little more than 1'x2'

with front legs that are longer than most and are made to slide into the

base and locked in with 1/2" bolts. For storage, the side legs are made to

retract and rebolt into their sockets, and the front arms are made to be

removeable and store vertically within the context of the base, and are

secured by the bolts that hold them in their sockets when in use.

So all in all, and after all the effort, and far sightedness, it gets wrapped

up in a tarp, and is left, folded up, to sit out in the driveway !

Go figure ! I did the engine job, it works fine, and I was able to remove

the swing set from the driveway, which made it look less like a JY, and

still be workable. Sorry, but I haven't the wherewithall to do pics.

Folding one sits in the corner out of the way. Used to have a none folding one, those are a pita to keep and store. Sold it to buy a folding one later on when I needed one again. Finally had a need and bought the folding one I have now.

Hi guys - I have a folding crane, but in my 4.6x5.2m (15x17.5) space, even folded up it is taking up valuable floor space. I think it probably needs to stay inside the garage, but I was wondering if anyone had any clever furniture ideas for not losing all the space around it? I don't have much wall, and losing ~2.5 feet worth of shelving potential seems quite costly!

Have a folding one which lives in a 20 ft shipping container with seasonal stuff.

Usually keep it in the basement but have it on the front porch after using it to remove the rear body shell from a Lotus and remove and install a battery pack from a Honda Insight. That was 6 months ago. Takes just 15 minutes to take it apart and carry the parts down to the basement but I always seem to think I'm going to use it next week.
