I just bought an older but basically brand new/never used Ex-cell W1000 engine hoist for a song. The ram leaks a little, not bad but a leak is a leak. I know it can be rebuilt.

I use a crane about 6-8 times a year, sometimes more. Previously had a 1 ton HF folding cherry picker, which works good but the lift arm is too short to pull an engine from a Mustang. I work alone 99.99% of the time. And I will be installing an engine back into a fox body soon, so when I seen this excel I jumped on it.

So, that being said, is it a worthwhile investment to go with a air/hydraulic ram? Those of you who have one with the air/hyd, how do you like it?

Oh, hell yeah! The ram on my ancient hoist finally went bad, so I got an air/hydraulic one from HF. Works great. The only change I want to make is to put a hand wheel on the pressure release screw so I don't have to drag the handle out and fit the grooves over the pin.
