Hi I'm trying to find a decent engine hoist? I will probably use it for mostly moving heavy stuff around the shop but ocassionally for engines. Does anybody have a good recommendation? I at one point thought about building a gantry type crane but decided an engine hoist would probably be easier and equally as usefull. Thanks for any suggestions.

The Harbor Freight shop crane is a pretty good unit, and breaks down nicely for storage. A bargain at $100 on black friday.

+1 on the HF, I have the 1 ton, bought used a couple years ago and still works great.

The long legs etc make moving things around a bit of a pain, but I still use it to lift stuff out of a truck and bring into the garage. Once in the garage a moving dolly with a sheet of 3/4 plywood on top is MUCH easier to move around. I also built my own dolly using 5" rubber over iron wheels from HF and two sheets of 3/4 plywood bolted together for the heavy and messy loads like blocks.

If you have a good spot to put an I beam and chain lift, I'd do it, both are cheap, and both are handy for different stuff.

Thanks I'll probably see about ordering one of the Harbour freight ones. As much as I would like an I beam I really don't have anything to attach it to.

I've been happy with my HF hoist. I've had it for more than 10 years and it's held up well. I've got to say though I use my motorcycle lift for moving heavy stuff around allot more than than I do the engine hoist.
