Been waiting a number of years for inspiration, to make something out of this cool bit of brass.
With my wife having a mild obsession with clocks and her birthday coming up, I thought why not a clock?

I usually surprise her with the junk I make her, but this time she got final say in all the design.

We talked over, whether to make it a wall, desk or floor clock.
It is heavy and large, so she opted for a floor mount, which lead to a walk through the bone yard.

First item she picked was a 10 belt pulley, good choice, with a small footprint and lots of mass to keep the COG low.

We then looked at a bunch of different column materials and she was was set on using a piece of 14"X 1/8" wall pipe.
As luck would have it, it fit nicely in the pulley.
It looked a bit bulky and so the decision was made to bevel the top, which kind of gives it a vent shaft look, fitting for a ship, we thought.

Next up, increment markers.
I really was not looking forward to carving numbers and suggested round markers.
Tried some stainless washers, she did not care for the look and mentioned some brass would look a lot better.
Got some brass valve tags out of the bone pile and mounted them, with the plain side out.
She wasn't having any of that and made me put the marked side out.
Some are steam, some condensate and some are heat.
The numbers on them are arbitrary.

Lastly, pulled the guts out of another clock and fastened it to the carcass.

This was a fun build with her driving the design.

Great job as always Royce, thank you for sharing!

So this was a part of a ship that mechanically transmits the captain's/bridge's orders to the engine room crew?

Yes, as I understand, one of these would be at the helm and one in the engine room.
There are two indicators on each one and two cables that link them together, so the motorman can transmit back to the helm that he received and acted on the command.
Thanks Matt

I'm a little late to the party with this idea but I gotta mention it. I got away into the back country the last few weeks and I discovered my cell phone was burning battery power in hours. I guess it was working too hard to connect where there was no service. I had to shut it down totally to preserve the battery but I was getting perturbed when every time I was curious to the time of day, I had to power it on and wait while it booted only to shut it off again right away. I ended up making a crude sun dial in the sand using a stick and some 6" pointed stones. It was great, the following days I just had to glance over at it to confirm in was diner time :)

Today my curiousity got the best of me and I googled "Best Angle For A Sun Dial"

Guess what my 1st thoughts were when I saw some of these?

No, it wasn't your cool piece of brass.
No, it wasn't your amazing clock.
OK, it was Royce.
Actually it was all of the above, right away I thought this would be right up your alley.
A little late I know but time is marching on so there will be more birthdays, anniversaries etc. so here's another idea for you! :)
