Has anyone removed their engine while on a kwiklift..
Do you use a cherry picker , is it tall enough??
or is the engine removed and installed from bottom of the car?

Show me some pictures if you have it. Thanks!

I think this is one of those "it depends" kind of things. Like how high does your cherry picker go? I assume ceiling height is not going to be an issue if you have a lift. What kind of car is it? Top or bottom, which is easier or even possible depends on the car.

I am just collecting information before I begin a project whether to leave it on the ground or not.. I don't have a picker yet, I noticed some go to 60" and some go to 85".. but the ceiling height will be fine (100"+).

But the lift raise the car 20", so looks like a cherry picker with a higher boom will be useful.

When I "dropped" the engine out of my 914, which is the only way it comes out, I really needed a lot more than 20" of clearance to pull the motor out through the rear of the car. I actually took the front tires off and jacked up the car from the middle to give me enough clearance to pull it out. For an american car I think the lift (even if it's just 20" of height) will be kind of a hassle, unless you're a tall guy. It would be too much like trying to pull the engine out of an old lifted 4X4. You would have to be standing on milk crates just to get to everything.

Just for reference: that's a Rover 3.9L V8 engine on the dolly next to my QuikLift; and you can see the little Craftsman welder on the rolling work stand next to it...car's too high & the rear of an MGB has to be even higher than the front to easily get the original engine in:

I can't see having it on a lift at all to remove an engine. If you can remove the engine from the top, you need the car on the floor so you don't overextend the boom. Other cars like a Porche 944, the engine has to come out the bottom with the x-member and the wheels and spindles have to be removed. You end up taking out the suspension and laying the car on the floor so the x-member touches than unbolt everything, lift the up and slid the engine out the side.

20" does not sound like much, well now that I see the picture but I do think it is kind of a hassle to make things go higher than necessary and the picker base will probably get in the ways of the lift's legs.

I have a 4' wide platform to bring myself to the about the same height to work under the hood when needed

back the car on the kwiklift, then lower the rear of the lift ( where the pipe is ) and use your cherry picker. I did it before on a 66 nova. worked well.

Call Danny at kwiklift. He can describe how to do it.

I doubt my cherry picker would go high enough. Just think, if you get the engine halfway out and then don't have room it may be a pain getting the car down off the kwiklift. Can you use the lift to undo all the connections, then lower it and pull the engine? I find that on some cars it is useful to jack the rear end up a bit to get the engine out.

It probably depends on the car. I have seen cars that I thought the engine would come out from the top and my nephew will drop them out from the bottom because it is so much easier. Ford is one of them. He has dropped all Taurus motors from underneath, I believe T-Birds also. Hyundai will drop from underneath. I will have to ask him what all. I do believe with him it depends on the suspension and whether it is FWD. Most of his FWD's drop from underneath. I do know that Camaro, that is the only way to get it out. For coming out from the top, I think a QuikLift would be awkward due to you would have to roll the car back and forth and you would still need the engine adjuster to get your tilt. With a cherry picker it seems it would be easier to raise and lower it than it would a lift. But that's my $.02 and that doesn't get you anything nowadays.
