The recent talk about engine stands got me thinking about why engine an engine stand couldn't be more. I'm thinking about making a tool tray that can be inserted or mounted to the adapter so that when it's not being used for engines, transmissions, etc it still is something useful.

That's a good idea and makes me wonder if you couldn't attach a shelf to the upright portion of the stand to hold tools and parts and such.

Best to just keep an engine on it, or have it folded up or taken apart waiting for one and not taking up the space.

I made some stuff, a shelf and finally got rid of it. It really was in the way more than it helped. What I did was hang a couple coffee cans from it to store a few pieces of hardware and bolts actually go with it. I reversed and removed most of those widgets.
The best thing was to have a table near, and some boards to be able to sit a drip tray or bucket as needed underneath.

I have a few Home Depot cement mixing trays, and those sit on the legs of motor stand well enough and catch all the drip.

I have a Hein Werner stand in a toolshed covered with canvas cloth at my mom's house. Used it twice since my friend gave it to me 4 years ago.

I tried something similar because it had been a few years since my engine stand had an actual engine on it. Granted, I didn't put much thought into it but I wound becoming just another clutter catcher. I had stuff piled on it, hanging from it and it just got in the way. I wound up taking it apart and storing it until I needed it as an engine stand again...

I have a piece of 1/2 inconel that is welded to gusseted angle that bolts to my engine stand. I can use it as a rotating welding table, work surface ect. Right now, the lower half has a stack of tires on it and it is pushed in my stairwell. Great for storing tires.
