Hey Gents, Sorry I didn't see the continued interest on this one! In the end I ended up getting it wired up and running, but when I put it in the car it wouldn't develop oip pressure (it did on the stand). So I pulled it again and the pan and found the oil pump hadn't completely seated when I torqued it. Once I re-seated it it was all systems go!
Another lesson on being even MORE diligent when installing parts.
The electric fan idea is good idea and if you're going to build one I'd go with 1.5"-2" stock for the frame.
I'll be using this stand quite a bit soon as I have a couple 390's and a couple flatheads in the build cue...
Reminds me of my high school days helping a neighbor break in boat motors before we lugged them back down the docks and into the boat. We would run them on their oil pans with a fuel line to an open topped coffee can, open exhaust, and heat exchangers feed through a hose running into a trash can. You haven’t felt torque until you’ve held a running small block upright while goosing the throttle. Of course having run and start switches would have been a huge improvement over holding one pair of wires together and sparking the other pair to get the motors running.
