If I'm not mistaken the reference is to a locomotive operator (Engineer).

I like those wrenches a lot. I pick them up whenever I see them for cheap.

Are slug wrenches the same thing?

Why the short handles? To whack with a hammer?

I've also seen them as a set of very thin wrenches.

Slug wrenches are intended to be used with a hammer. Engineers/Line/Service wrenches are not.

Hydraulic fittings have large hex sizes due to the size of line used, 1" for example, but require a lot less torque than a bolt with a 1" hex head would.

I've slowly been building a set.I use them regularly for hydraulic hoses in tight spots and they are really nice when you have to adjust a set of bucket leveling chains inside a boom.

The engineers wrenches are great for machine tool work. I keep them for the sizes I need to do setups and change things on my lathe. You can never grab the wrong end of the wrench. Other than next to me lathe though, I dont think they are as versitile/economical as just having doubler end or combo wrenches.

Here's a variety of them, I ran across the pic in my photobucket account, they're in my box that I'm working on getting to to clean out and organize, don't really use them anymore, but I'll hang on to them, you never know. I know I used them on spindle nuts for some saws as well.

Those look line "line wrenches". Mostly used on AN fittings in tight spaces.

This place *****!!!!

I've had a few of those over the years and thought nothing of them, now I'm thinking it would be sweet to own a complete set.
