EPIQ Top Box or...?

I'm absolutely happy with my 84" EPIQ. Fantastic box, the best I've had so far. Coming from a 72" KRL I wasn't expecting such a massive difference in... everything really. Drawer layout, 3 full length drawers, height and of course the depth. Great, just great box.

I've got an issue however and it is that the box is full with very little room to add more tools. Most people add a hutch and a locker or two but I'd prefer to just have more drawers.

Before I call the R'n'R truck, would anyone have anything to say against the EPIQ top box? I'm okay with not having the worktop. The top box I'm looking to get is the one without the lid.

Thanks,
F

It’s up to you but for me I have gotten to the point that I like having the top of my box available for work.
Over the years as I have gotten so many tools, and for me a giant toolbox just does not work.
I keep my primary tools in my main box. My other boxes hold the less often used tools and are divided by tool types.
Measuring tools
Machine tools
Clamps
Engine building
Etc

If getting that epiq top is what works for you and you can afford it, then go for it. They are beautifull

If you are short having a top box might not be fun. I would rather have some side boxes and a work surface personally, as I really like having the work piece on the work surface, and the tools right under it.

I haven't actually pulled up the prices but I'd bet you could buy 2 lockers off the RnR truck for around the same price as the top box.

Might seem like a waste compared to all the drawers a top box offers but take into account that each locker has 4 large drawers in the bottom plus 2 pull out trays. All of the larger blow molded cased tools that you might be storing in the bottom drawers of your box can be moved and catalogued into the pull out trays. If your 84" doesn't have a power drawer you could get the power locker and you can effectively move all your cordless or air powered tools to a convenient rack.

If you don't want full lockers you could get a power drawer half locker like this one pictured at SFC2018. I would imagine even that (not so) small addition would free up a considerable amount of storage in the main box. 4b6e670178ea3e6b878f54a073105bbb.jpg

Depending on how tall you are, the top drawers may be difficult to reach. I’m 5’10” and I can barely reach the back of my top drawer. An Epic with full drawers will be about 5” taller than my combo (1” taller casters plus one more drawer), so you might need a step stool.

I have limited floor space so it makes sense for my shop, I prefer having a top box.

Right.. Didn't think about that. Thank you. I will struggle to reach to the back of top drawers, that's for sure. A bit of a downer this one but again, thanks for bringing it up.

My only reservation for not going for a locker (or two) is it will be extremely difficult to move my toolbox about. At the moment it's in a temporary spot and when someone needs access to area next to it, I move it. So making it even wider is where it gets tricky for me.

Thanks. I'm currently fitting in one 84" EPIQ with all of my stuff, apart from shop tools and equipment of course. I use my EPIQ for hand tools and various kits only and it works. Measuring dept is constantly growing but I'm still doing ok. I hear you re worktop and as convenient as it is, I'd be prepared to sacrifice it as the shop I'm in has a few workbenches around.

True. I'm considering other options at the moment as it seems to be too serious an issue to overlook given the cost of the top box.

Are those only available for the EPIQ series or do they make half lockers for Masters series as well?

Ha! I was half thinking of getting a top storage to fit on top of the top box for big and rarely needed stuff. I wouldn't mind climbing to reach it every now and then but to do the same with the top box is a bit of a push.

90% of my tools are snap, but I decided on this 10' box combo with another 72" roll-away, the money I saved allowed me to do this to my home shop

Happy for you pal. Your setup looks great. I wouldn't need as many drawers and my machinery would use up all your free space and mark that clean floor. I'd also be missing my 2 post lift quite dearly. It is probably as relevant to you as your post to the title of my thread. No offense friend :lol_hitti

Point taken and its my fault for chiming in as I went back and reread your question and I misinterpreted your question.

As for lift, Scissor lift is next up for me :)

Good luck on your decision

I have a epiq 84 with a locker attached to left side. I was thinking of doing the topbox but i didnt feel like spending that much more money. So i just bought a epiq rollcart workstation and its huge. I just put it right next to my epic 84 rollcab and the rollcart has a steel worktop also. If you do put a epic topbox on you will probably need a step ladder to see in the top drawer.

Another vote for a side boxes or lockers. An Epic roll cart wouldn't be a bad way to go either if you need the mobility. ;)
