Supercoat Epoxy

Got everything removed from my garage this weekend. This week I'm going to degrease/pressure wash/acid etch the floor to prep it.

I'm going to put down some SuperCoat Epoxy next weekend and was wondering how many of you guys put on 2 coats of epoxy and if its needed? It takes about 2 kits to cover my garage and I'm wondering if I should buy a 3rd kit to put another thinner coat on top.

What do you guys recommend?

Definitely 2 coats. 1st coat will probably only prime the concrete. The 2nd coat will finish it off.

I have a total of 4 coats on mine with 3 different steps, the last two coats being the same product.

Check with product manufacturer. I think there is a time restriction for a second coat. Rustoleum recommends re-coating within 24 hours, any longer than that they recommended "scuffing" the surface to get a mechanical bond.

Thanks for the info guys, the instructions just say how to apply, not how many coats. Of course it does come with a glaze that you put over it as sort of an extra layer of protection. I bought enough epoxy to put on 2 coats plus a single coat of glaze. Got the garage degreased and acid etched this past weekend.

It might depend on your color if you want/need a third coat. Check with the manufacturer to see if the product can be reduced. I like to do three coats with the epoxy product. The first coat acts like a primer. I reduce the second coat to get good coverage and fill in the color. It sometimes looks good enough, but then I apply a third coat at full strength-this really does the trick and makes the floor look great! Plus the additional coats can build durability and make the floor wear longer.

To my knowledge, you will be the first person on here to install SuperCoat.

Floor came out great. Put down 2 coats of Supercoat.

Only problem I had was that I put down some painters tape on the epoxy after 12 hours of drying. I did the trim work on the walls and then pulled up the tape and it chipped the edge of the epoxy in a few spots. Guess I should have let it cure longer before putting down the tape

I moved all of my stuff into the garage, dragged metal shelves and benches across it and it didn't even scatch it. I'll get some pics and do a writeup soon

Well ... maybe I didn't wait long enough. (or didn't prep properly)
After letting my floor "cure" for a week; I started with one bench ... and it started to scratch just inside the door.

I grabbed an old sleeping bag that I keep in the back of my truck; jacked the bench up, put the bag under the legs and slid it into position.
Continued "slidding" everything without wheels into position using the "bag" method.

An update after 2 years of use on my Supercoat floor.

It has held up great. The only spot where I had a prolem is where I spilled some brake fluid and didn't wipe it up right away. It sort of mixed with the epoxy and made it come off in that one spot. I'm very pleased with it. I drag axles and jackstands across it and it has held up well. When I sweep and mop the floor it looks like new.

For the money its hard to beat.

********, I too would like to see pictures of your floor, as I'm considering using SUPERCOAT. Do you have a clear coat on your floor? If so, do you have the Residential Glaze Coat or the Industrial Glaze Coat? How many coats? Thanks.

Why go to all the work and take the chance. 2 coats, you'll be happy you did.
