My garage floor has a metal plate in it, covering the access for sewer cleanout (I think.. it's not labeled). How best to handle this when applying epoxy flooring? Any pictures of examples results?

You should post some pictures so the guys and girls can visualize exactly what you are talking about.

By the way welcome to the Garage Journal.

Thanks, good idea. I'll post pictures, but it will have to wait until next week because I'm actually out of state on business right now. I'm sitting in my hotel room researching garage projects!

Until I can take a picture, maybe this will help. It looks similar to this:

I can't tell if that's metal or plastic, mine is metal. And it doesn't say "electric" on it like that. But think that general shape and style. From memory I'd guess it's about 10 inches by 14 inches rectangular. It's flush with the garage floor, with concrete going right up to the edge.

I have not used epoxy but I would imagine that you could do 1 of 2 things.

1. Coat the floor as per recomendations and paint/ powder coat the cover to match.

2. Coat the floor and the trim around the cover at the same time. Then coat the cover and install it when everything is set.

I would imagine that the floor epoxy is like most coatings and could probably be appied to multiple surfaces. There are several suppliers of epoxy systems that frequent this thread and if you were to call them up I am sure they have come accross similar situations in the past...

Or one of them might find this and reply on here.

Best of Luck!

Do the correct prep for your concrete. Tape off the complete metal plate taking care to apply it neatly to the edge. Apply the epoxy on the concrete. Use a razor blade to score the epoxy around the plate and then pull your tape. If you are wanting to coat the plate with the same epoxy to keep the same look across the floor. Pull the lid off and do this piece the same time you do the floor. You really don't want to coat it in place as you coat the floor because it will "weld" it shut and be real difficult to open later (if you can).

If pulling the plate off before epoxy is applied. Use a real good duct tape to create a "wall" around the inner edge. Clean off the inner wall and apply the tape leaving raised off the surface about 1/2". This will keep epoxy from falling into the hole.
