I had Performance Floor Coating Systems (Epoxy Coat) install an epoxy floor with clear in my 1010 square foot garage. I figured I'd need a week to prep and do the work. They did it in 2 days.

Here are some pictures of my recent floor installation.

Looks Great! We love getting the phone calls that I got from you, it really made my day. I did pass on your words of praise to the owner of the company about John.

Well it finally happened. First I dropped a cordless drill, chuck end down on the new epoxy floor.:shocking: Got really pi..ed at myself and yelled alot. Next day I couldn't find the small chip I put in it. Spent a few minutes on my hands and knees and finally found it. It seemed so much bigger when it first happened. The color chips really hide alot.

Second, I pulled my muddy snow covered truck into the garage for the first time since the Epoxy Coat installation. :willy_nil
I hated to do it but I needed to clean the interior.
I found I need a mop and bucket to clean up after hosing things down. The squeege doesn't get all the water to and around the drain.
Clean up was amazing
Thanks Epoxy Coat.

get yourself a touchup kit and mix a little to dab into the chips. I have dropped a few things that took chunks out of mine. Thats why I got some racedeck tiles to make a hybrid. This protects the floor from falling parts etc. Also, I think the epoxy helps the water drain away under the tile faster.

Here's a question for anyone thats done an Epoxy floor. I have a small birdbath in the concrete about 2 feet from my floor drain. So naturally the water sits in it. It just happens to be at the front of where we park my wifes car so we always have to step over it.

Question is, can I take a grinder and grind a shallow trough about 3/16 deep x 3-4 inches wide from the center of the bird bath to the drain and hide it with a new coat of color, chips and clear, or is it going to be too noticable? I have a little product left over that may still be good. It's between the drain and wall in the 3rd picture.

I don't want to mess up the beautiful floor but I also don't want to have to deal with a puddle of water.

Epoxy Coat's warranty is lifetime on peeling and flaking. One year on installation. EC had one of their licensed installers do the work. These guys travel all over the US doing installations. Mine was small compared to jobs they normally do for the govt and NASA and industry.

I don't have any problems with the installation, no peeling or flaking issues. The birdbath is a result of the original floor finish. I should have sprayed the floor down and looked for birdbaths before we did the work and taken care of the birdbath myself. Its not EC's fault.

They are the same.
The installers spread a very thin coat of the color and let is set for about 3 hours before putting the regular, thick coat of color on. I call it a primer coat. While it was setting up they ran into town to get a motel for the night. They feel they get a better finish and coverage that way. I've also heard that when you do this it helps to reduce any bubbles.

Al, one word of advice. Unlike painting wall where you try to move and spread the paint out as far as it will go and not run and still get good coverage you dont' do that with epoxy on the floor.
Since your not really worried about runs, when they put the full color coat on after the first thin coat, they squeege it on very thick and then back-roll it in several directions. Back-rolling helped to provide even coverage. The thicker coverage also hides any imperfections in the concrete. If your adding chips, don't be to concerned about small particles of dust etc. The flakes and any anti slip will hide them.

I'm so glad I had this done as I would have spread it too thin and tried to "conserve" the epoxy. That would have been a huge mistake as I'd only have a very thin layer of epoxy and little protection. Hope this helps you on your basement floor.

Does anyone know of an EC installed in the Charlotte, NC area? I want to use EC, but Ive never painted a floor or used epoxy so I want to have a pro do it.

Dave,

thanks for clarifying about the primer.
i should be getting the kit tomorrow afternoon and hopefully start laying out epoxy on friday.

my original shipment was "lost" due to UPS awesome service and Christine was great enough to send out another set yesterday... everything seems to be as normal as it can be... tracking is updating and all.

i think i'll have to practice in spreading epoxy with squeegee... this is new to me...
have to do some math and spread out my work in groups.

thanks again.

After a year of use I thought I should give an update on my Epoxy Coat floor system. The epoxy has held up very well. I should however let you know that I am very careful of what I do in the garage. I have dropped a cordless drill on it and chipped the clear coat in one spot. Problem is, I can't find the spot now so its not a big deal. I mean if I can't even find it .... Other than that, no problems. My Polaris Ranger will leave some rubber marks if I turn the tires to sharp but they rub right off with a piece of paper towel. You don't want to use a cloth towel or your finger due to the grit in the epoxy.

I'm really glad I put the non slip on the finish coat because the epoxy is VERY SLIPPERY without it. I store snowmobiles in the garage in the winter and I have to be careful not to let the carbide runners scratch the floor when I move them in and out. I have a snowmobile dollie so it's not a big problem.

Clean up of the garage floor is a breeze. Dirt and leaves sweep up a lot easier than before and mopping is a simple process. I did have to buy a micro fiber type of mop head as the anti slip tears cotton fiber mops and leaves cotton fiber residue.

I have not noticed any yellowing or staining of the epoxy. I've experienced dog urine, gasoline, oil and no ill effects to the epoxy.

Our home is on a crawl space so our garage acts as a basement and storage area as well as garage. The Epoxy Coat flooring has turned a ho-hum garage into a pleasant place to work on vehicles and projects while still being a garage. We even cleared things out last winter and had a winter picnic with friends in the garage.

Here are a few pictures of the garage today. Sorry for the mess but we just finished moving into the house (previously our second home) and haven't organized everything yet. Time for another garage for storage ????
