Epoxy-coat over paint

I am planning to coat my garage floor. It was painted by the previous owner a few years back and has a few spots where hot tires have pulled up the paint. I plan to rent a floor sander and run it over the floor as the beginning steps of prep. If the paint is well adhered, and I follow all the prep steps correctly, will the Epoxy-coat lay down OK.

Thanks

DCS is correct. Your epoxy could be perfect but if the paint below starts to come up your epoxy is going to come up with it. I would either prep the floor or use a tile or seamless system such as BLT

Dude, I know it seems like it will be a real pain to get the paint off, and you are probably right. However, if you are going to spend the money on the epoxy coating you should definitely spend the time/money getting the concrete prepped properly.

Don't bother with a sander, it will gum up very quickly and not really prep the concrete. Just try a small section with a hand sander and you'll see that it will sort of take off the paint but then the concrete isn't really bare like it needs to be. Just rent the concrete grinder or have someone do it. There is definitely a price point where paying to have it removed is cheaper than doing it your self, it just depends on the rental rates and how much you are doing.

If it is just a paint, its best to remove it. Our product is only as good as what its bonding to. My recommendation is to diamond grind the floor, this will work twofold, it will remove the paint and profile the concrete for the epoxy. No acid etch will be required. Let me know if you have more questions on this.
