Epoxy-Coat Questions

I've been lurking for about a year now and thanks to this post:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=192328

I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the Epoxy-Coat Premium Kit from a local retailer.

I do have a question though.

Does anyone know if it comes with the Non-Skid Aluminum Oxide or do I have to order this separately?

My floor prepping plan of action is to:

1) Rent a floor buffer from HD and use a Diamabrush
2) Grind the edges with an angle grinder
3) Vacuum up all the dust and finish off with a towel soaked in Denatured Alcohol to clean the floors

I'm a little nervous about tackling such a large project but this forum has so many helpful members it gave me the courage and confidence to try and tackle it myself!

From what I have seen, some places you have to add it to your order. As always check on-line videos to see how others have done it, get tips and tricks. Then of course if you have any other questions you can call where you got the kit from. Unless it is a Hardware type store. If it is I would just find a reputable place online and give them a call with some questions. Most are eager to help. Or even check out their blogs. So much to learn online but sometimes talking with a real person from a company can put your mind at ease. Pics after your done.!

Non-skid is included, if you're speaking of our product. It's easy if you are prepared and take it 1 batch at a time.

Awesome! Thanks. I'm pretty excited to start prepping the floor this week and installing it over the 3 day holiday weekend. :D

I haven't bought the epoxy yet but already bought two pairs of spike shoes from amazon.

I'm thinking of getting TAUPE base color with black/brown/white flakes.

What's the disadvantage or advantage of not applying the clear coat? Will the base coat be as durable w/o the clear coat?

Just picked up my Epoxy-Coat kit yesterday (dark gray base with gray blend flakes). Hoping to start the prep Sunday and finished on Monday.

Debating if I want to use the non skid or not...

Trey, if I may offer a suggestion regarding the spike shoes. A lot of people seem to complain that the nuts comes loose and screws up their coating, or a spike pops out. If you dab some superglue when setting the spike and some on the threads right before tightening that should resolve those issues.

I also like to turn the shoes upside down and put a bit more glue between the nut and spike thread.

Awesome tip. I don't have super glue but I have a lot of blue (medium) strength loctite that I will use.

Trey, did you finish up the garage? I didn't get a chance to. My Epoxy-Coat kit didn't come in until this Tue (after Memorial Day) so my plans of doing it over the holidays got shot.

I'm hoping the weather holds out and I can knock it out Sunday - Tuesday

I just ordered it last night and expect delivery date of 6/10. I was comtemplating with my floor design and not able to finalize yet but the colors I chose were beige and black.

I ordered:
-beige full kit w/ clear ($430) <<--- I think this kit comes with one pair of spike shoes
-black half kit ($143)

I got a two-car detached garage with 22ft width (1ft | 16ft garage door | 5ft for workbench).

I have two ideas:
1. beige w/ metallic flakes w/ black border with metallic flakes w/ clear coat
2. beige w/ friction enhancement (i.e. sharkbite) w/o flake w/ black border w/ metallic flakes w/ clear coat

I don't have any visual aid but the beige is where cars will be parked and black border will be 1ft wide left, rear, and front; 5ft wide right. LET ME KNOW WHAT Y'ALL THINK.

I think option 2 would looks cooler personally... You "work area" has slip resistance and means business while your border or "walkway" is a bit more decorative and gives the floor some flair. Please post pics when you're done!!

Thanks. I think I will go w/ the second idea.

My Steps:
1. PREPARATION
a. Wash and push-broom w/ water - DONE
b. Wash and push-broom w/ soap - DONE
c. Degrease Floor
d. Acid Etch (back-up plan is to floor grind)
2. PRIME as recommended by Epoxy-Coat GJ person
3. BASE COAT "work area" in beige w/ friction enhancement
a. Mask for border ****
4. BASE COAT border in black w/ flakes
5. CLEAR COAT

I will mask for the black border using the non-residue 3M duct tape. WHAT DO Y'ALL THINK?

Sorry if I dare ask, as far as I understand you are applying flow type epoxy coating over a pre-existant floor: are you spreading any intermediate layer under the epoxy level? (I mean apart from the primer)

Here's the current condition of the garage. I have the acid but I think I'm gonna skip that step and grind it. WHAT DOES EVERYONE THINK?

I thought about the idea of painting the "work area" (beige) before the "border" (black w/ flakes). What kind of problem would run into logistically? Can someone help, please?

I have this very same kit sitting in my living room - got it through Lowes.com with 20% off... so it was a smoking deal! (10% online + 10% via discover's home improvement promotions)

Still need to order some spike shoes, I have a standard 2 car garage with a small raised area for washer/dryer/water heater. Hoping the 384oz kit is enough to cover it :)

Will be a few weeks yet till I have time to do it right, gotta finish up putting up part of a new ceiling and attic stairs. Not to mention clear the place out and grind.

Is it better to do the epoxy floor first? Then paint the walls/ceiling. Or the other way around?
