I’m undecided if I should get our garage floor coated with epoxy this fall or wait for spring. The current temperatures over here are about 15 deg Celsius (59 Fahrenheit) during the day and about 8 deg Celsius (46 Fahrenheit) at night. The slab is not insulated (no foam underneath slab). The garage is heated but I understand they will need to keep the garage doors open during and after the applications.
Is it appropriate to do the application before winter or should I wait for next spring ?
The short answer is there is a great deal of difference between different coatings and products. In most cases you are going to be using a system, meaning a primer, epoxy coating and a base coating. You should read the
Technical Data Sheet for each and go with the lowest temperature.
Keep in mind cure times are affected by the temp as well. The technical data sheet I linked to above calls for
APPLICATION TEMPERATURE:
60-90 degrees F with relative humidity below 85%
In the same system, the Urethane:
APPLICATION TEMPERATURE:
50-90 degrees F with relative humidity between 60-90%
The Primer:
APPLICATION TEMPERATURE:
55-90 degrees F with relative humidity below 75%
** Technically speaking these are ambient temperatures where the product is being installed. If you keep the area heated and open the door during install you should be ok, especially if you start heating the area days before... If however, you turn the heat on the day of... concrete temps and air temps are both going to factor in.
