Epoxy Coating Section of Garage Wall?

I recently had my garage floor coated in Rust-Oleum epoxy floor coating + their premium clear coat.

I have about a 6-8 inch tall concrete portion of the garage wall I want to coat as well. However, this is painted with typical wall paint that the rest of the house is painted in.

This is a brand new house and the garage floor was very easy to clean to install the epoxy so it didn't require much prep work. I am wondering how much prep do I need to do on the wall portion?

Can I epoxy over the paint, or does it need to be completely removed then further prep done? Obviously the wall won't ever be driven on or anything so its not a high impact area.

I searched and couldn't really find anything on this, any help would be appreciated.

You have two options:

1. If you think the existing paint will hold up and adhere well, then I would prep the wall and prime it before applying the epoxy base coat.

2. If you think it will peel down the road, scrub the paint off (mechanically or soda blasting), but not entirely and prime it. I'm not sure if paint stripper is a good idea since it may drip onto your floor.

I would not suggest applying an epoxy coating over a water-based latex paint. which is what most interior wall and ceiling paint is. Once the wall paint fails, so will your epoxy system.

Remove the existing paint by either wire wheel, pressure washing, or soda blasting. I would suggest not using a paint stripper because it adds chemicals that are unnecessary to the process.

Like you mentioned, this are will not see much abuse, so a ICRI-CSP 1 high pressure wash would be adequate preparation. Be sure to hold the nozzle close and cover all exposed concrete you'd like coated. Thin your fist coat 15-20% and apply somewhat heavy with a 4" roller as a lot will absorb into the concrete. Apply your second and/or third coats unthinned.
