Hey guys. I'm a builder and long time garage journal lurker. My next personal house I am about to start will be a 4 car and I've already got my 2 post lift and some brand spankin new new age performance plus cabinets to put in it. I know I want to do an epoxy floor but there are so many threads (yes I've read an searched) but no definitive guide I could find for a brand new floor. Ie when I have my concrete subcontractor pour my slab, should we not seal it? Do we need to etch it or grind it as some have done here? Any help would be appreciated....

Jim,

Keep lurking. All your questions have been addressed over and over.

Dont seal it, Grind it after it cures, and coat.

If you're building a few homes, maybe call a local epoxy contractor and press the builder card. I give my builders deals on their houses. Most small custom builders up my way use their house as a show home, so I chalk it up to a marketing expense. IT pays off.

I'm in the very early stages of a garage (as in still planning) and am interested in the do's and don't of epoxy over new installs.

Please update this thread with links to the other relevant threads. I'll do the same.

Is there a sticky with epoxy, sealing, coating info?

I did some quick searching and found these threads to be helpful to me.

From what I gather grinding as a prep is the preferred method prior to applying whichever epoxy product is chosen.

I'm wondering if it's possible to have the concrete surface textured at the time of pour in order to skip the grinding (as in save the cost and time of grinding).

For my case this will be a new install and I could ensure no traffic or activity from the time of concrete pour until application of the epoxy coat. Unless I'm missing something doing the epoxy immediately seem the best way to avoid introducing something to the concrete that will cause problems with the epoxy.

Is there a concrete person here who can answer the surfacing question?

There aren't any stickies regarding this type of information. The search function here does not work as well as an internet search engine, but it works none the less. It just takes some time reading through the different threads.

As far do's and don'ts for applying epoxy over new concrete.

  • Do use a vapor barrier
      • Don't use fiber reinforced concrete if you can help it.
  • Don't use a cure and seal or any sealer for that matter after the pour.
  • Do wait a minimum of 28 days (even longer is better) before epoxy application
  • Do a moisture test before surface prep to make sure slab has stopped outgassing moisture from the cure process
  • Do prep the concrete in the same manner as an older slab. New pour or not, surface prep is still the same.
  • Do use a primer

There are other small things that I'm sure people will want to add to this, but this is the basics to start with.
