Epoxy floor scratched

Hello all,

About a month ago, an elderly gentleman decided to remodel the front of my house with his Lexus. He demolished the partition next to the garage door, bent up the garage door, destroyed the water main feeding the house....

....Luckily, the contractor who had built the house was available. He gave me a fair quote on repairs, the Lexus driver's insurance company paid up, and the front of the house has been restored, with a new garage door.

Done deal, right? Well, almost.... The garage floor was painted with ( I guess ) epoxy paint. Now there are long, deep scratches in the paint, parallel to the garage door, about a foot away from it. These scratches are in places deep enough to catch a fingernail.

I informed the contractor, he informed the garage door guy - the garage door guy called me with an attitude..."You're going to make me repaint your garage floor?" He said "There's a LOT of stuff in that garage!" Well, there is...automotive tools, welding equipment, small machine tools etc etc. But I have always been VERY careful not to scratch that floor, in spite of all the stuff. I value that floor greatly.

So - what can be done? This is the epoxy floor paint that Home Depot carries. My understanding about Epoxy paint is that it is not very touch-up-able. There is a crack control groove in the floor about 6 feet in.

Often you can lightly sand, solvent wipe and recoat. BUT you need to check the specs on what you have. Of course you could grind it off and go with a new system :)

I'm not following, why would the garage door guy have fix the floor? Did he scratch it? Why wasn't the damage included in the insurance paid?

You could probably touch it up so it looks pretty good, not perfect, and move on with life. Depends on the system and how picky you are.

I was thinking the same thing? If he made the scratch while installing your new garage door yeah he is going to fix it.

If it was damaged by the Lexus owner why is your contractor having a garage door installer do flooring?

You could use a 660-grit sandpaper to remove the scratches from the floor. Sand the scratched surface with a back-and-forth motion following the line of the scratch until you grind down the the edges of the scratches to create a smooth surface. Sand until the scratch is no longer visible in the epoxy covering.
