i am looking for some help on flooring/epoxy for my brand new garage build. i have been searching and reading on here and other sites but i wanted to get some personalized advice for my situation.

is it necessary to diamond grind a brand new floor? it was poured on April 5, so just a few days ago. they did leave the surface very smooth and as far as i can tell perfectly smooth; they did an outstanding job!

if i do put down a floor i want it done now before i move my tools in and start getting oil on it.

i do a lot of welding and cutting and metal work. i do a lot with chemicals as i am a gearhead and tinker on engines, transmissions, motorcycles, ATVs, etc etc so it needs to be able to take a beating.

suggestions and opinions are welcomed... thanks for helping out a noobie

Epoxy is great. However, welding will hurt it if not protected.
A urethane clear coat over the epoxy will give you a long lasting finish and excellent resistance to most garage chemicals. Also... you will have to grind or acid etch, name your poison.

If you want the anti-coating, look into a densfier treatment including waterproofer. This may be a good choice if your floor is super smooth.

thanks scotty, so basically i need to prep the floor regardless if it is new or 20y/o. i am thinking i will make some sort of welding/cutting mat i can put down when needed or just try to do the heavy work outside.

i would like to talk to a professional/company about getting this done but i am not sure what to look for in my area... would they be under "flooring"? any suggestions for Senoia, GA; 30276?

EDIT: not to toot my own horn but i do feel i am quite handy (thats what the wife says) so i am NOT above doing this myself if it isnt rocket science. its just that i have never done an epoxy floor before... so any suggestions/opinions in that arena will help.

thanks again

I think one of our regular posters lives near you.
You can try to start a new post requesting an installer near you.
Our installers get around $3800-$4300, for 750-900 sq ft. as a reference.

However, this is very doable for any DIY guy. I talked (2) first timers through installs today!! :)

Do some searches on the forum , it's an invaluable tool when attempting to do this for the first time. Frankly, the hardest part is the prep, coating is relatively easy.
