Epoxy flooring over old cracked tile?

All,

I am a first time home owner (3 cheers for debt :) )! We have an 2.5 car attached garage with cracked tile flooring (built in 1961). I am not sure if the tile was from the original build or not but my inspector advised me that the cracked tiles could contain asbestos. The previous owners (owned the house for the past 10 years) never had the floor tested.

I was wondering if rather than having the flooring ripped up and tested if we could apply the epoxy over the entire garage to seal the tile and give us a much nicer looking garage floor.

Thanks,
Lammy

The big question would be how well they are holding down - not sure whether you mean they are cracking and coming up or just have cracks in them. If they are coming up at all then I wouldn't advise coating over them.

Parts of the tile are torn up. Parts of them are starting to come up. I guess i could always do the home test to see if they have asbestos and then tear it up if it doesnt.

I tore out a bunch of linoleum tile that was installed in the fifties. It probably had asbestos in it but if you use a lot of soapy water to keep it from getting dusty and only use hand tools it really isn't much of a risk. I was careful to wet vac the floor numerous times to get all the residue off.

cough, cough...
