Epoxy Flooring - What should I ask?

I’m moving into a new construction home and am looking to hire a guy to epoxy the garage. The person I’ve been in touch with said:

”I use 100% solids primer, base coat, and a polyurethane clear coat. 3 days application time. 2 days until you can walk on it and 7 days before vehicle traffic or heavy objects”

Is this a reasonable quality? It’s just my home garage, so I don’t need anything crazy. Any specific questions I should ask, or is it reasonable to move forward?

Ask them if it's 100% solids, how do they apply it.

I would ask what brand, and exactly products they're using, as well as what preparation they are doing, what the warranty is.

Grinding for prep work?
Flake or no flake?
Anti slip additive in the top coat?
I agree with warranty, and brand.
Might ask to see their work, do they have a showroom or other customers work they are currently working on that you can see?
Ask what the floor can resist, compared to how you plan to use it… like brake clean or oil spills or brake fluid etc…

You should wait at least 6 months before applying epoxy to your garage floor. That said, I'd find guy that knows what he's doing.

Good point! 6 months from when the concrete slab was poured? That was in May, so it has been 6 months. Or six months after a different event?

The rule of thumb with coatings and a 4" thick slab is a minimum of 30 days. If you are pushing 6 months then you are more than fine.

Here is a 3 minute video that can help a homeowner select a competent garage flooring contractor.

Good idea to check references, BBB, and Yelp for customer feedback.
