Hi Everyone,
My wife is hell-bent on having our garage floor painted with flakes put in the paint and then cleared over the top. Have any of you had a professional company do this? Does it hold up? Is it worth it?

Let’s first answer how you use your garage. If you are the type that likes to do a lot of welding or metal work, heavy engine repair then I would look at another product. If it is just for storage, parking cars and some occasional DIY homeowner stuff epoxy will be fine and can be one of the cheaper alternatives if you are going to outsource it.

In my neck of the woods I couldn’t find anyone to do porcelain tile for my 483sq ft 2 car garage for less than 6 grand plus materials. Trust me I looked for 8 months. 100% solids epoxy with polyaspartic top coat and full flake came in a $7 bucks a sq ft. Or about $3300 installed. I really wanted porcelain tile but we just didn’t have the extra cash to go there because of a massive rebuild of the entire home.

It’s all about the prep work.

Prep is most important part, as mentioned above. If you want to DIY route, there’s several companies on this forum that supply kits. Best system for flakes is epoxy base coat, flake to rejection, then Polyaspartic or 2 coats of urethane. $6-8 per square foot is common for install. You can do it for a lot cheaper if you’re detail oriented.

Flake floors are beautiful flooring systems and most common on residential garages.

Welcome. Use the search function at the top of the page and spend a couple of hours educating yourself on the topic. There are probably a hundred threads on here about this topic, and you'll learn the positives and negatives to epoxy, as well as the many other options for shop floor coatings. Your time will be well spent, for certain. You'll also see a slew of cool photo's of other folks flooring!
