Has anyone ever had their countertops done with "Floor" epoxy? My Mom just had her KITCHEN counters done and it's INCREDIBLE. They feel like Granite, they can do ANY color, takes about 6 hours from prep to cleanup and would be durable as hell!

I'm thinking now of doing some of my workbenches when I do my floors. As well, why not apply the epoxy part way up the wall? Talk about a durable, scratch/dent/water resistant coating!

It's a business they are doing here - so of course I was thinking of all you handy, yet currently unemployed guys out there!! Minimal tool outlay, minimal material cost, etc.
Here's the process if you're interested: After removing ALL the appliances and covering EVERYTHING else with plastic, they opened the windows and set up a fan to get a cross-flow air pattern (like a paint booth). They sanded the arbourite lightly, then coated the counters with the epoxy. As it set up they sprayed another paint in a spatter-pattern to emulate a granite look. Aftert that dried they put on a sealer. Final touch was a nice silicone edge against the backsplash and around the sink. Whala - beautiful! Another happy old lady:bounce:

All right all right.....even though I'm IN Vancouver, at my parents place....with the amazing properties of computers and the net....I took some pics with Mom's digital, pulled the card, inserted into my laptop, uploaded (wireless in their seniors complex!) to PB and transfered here...for your extreme pleasure!

Ok so I'm totally sold here.

My situation is this. In our house for some stupid reason the previous owner put in kelly green counter tops. They are beautifully made and are extensive, but they're GREEN! I simply can't remove them as they're perfect except for the colour. Do you know what type of epoxy system was used here I'd love to do this in our kitchen and certainly have the tools to do so. Funnily enough, my wife asked how difficult it would be to recover what we have and I looked into it. Too much $$ for a cosmetic change we both agreed. This epoxy may just be the ticket.

I'd love to learn more about what material they used.

Awesome...Along with some $29.99 Gladiator cabinets for the walls, maybe a snap-on scissor lift for a kitchen table, and my wife would never be able to get me out of the kitchen.

It's just a "Garage Floor" Epoxy product. I'm not sure about the paint they splattered on for the granite effects - could be a basic latex or more epoxy. Then they sealed it all with clear epoxy.
As you say, many people buy a home and don't like the color, many people tire of the choice, but don't want to replace the top altogether. This is a pretty good option IMO.

Virtually all finishes sold commercially are inert after they've cured. This would be the clear coats, some colors could contain some nasty stuff like cadmium or even lead, but these would have to chip off and stick to foodstuffs.

My big question is, will it *look* like a painted countertop.
(ie, Marble/Granite/etc for the Kitchen ... not the garage...)

Make sure you use a polyurethane top coat. Most epoxies will turn yellow if they are in direct sunlight.

we have toyed with the idea of having the epoxy overcoat done on our main house and the wife and I want to do concrete countertops on a foreclosure we are redoing....Lots of info but I love hearing from someone who has done it 1st hand

You guys should look into "Countertop Transformations" from Moder Masters. They sell kits in Lowes in the paint section. It is essentially a full flake broadcast with 1/16" (small) flakes. You sand down the existing Laminate tops, paint on epoxy, broadcast flakes. Then you scrape to knock down the texture and seal. If you want less texture you can scrape more or add an extra coat of sealer.

(what would have been even cooler is if you built it out of drinking straws from fast food restaurants, so it would have been a true straw house)

I thought about making my counters out of MDF, then coating with that Countertop Transformations stuff.

I built a kitchen counter top and a bathroom vanity using MDF, a concrete overlay material and epoxy. So far both tops are holding up well to the abuse of my rental property. Both products were not really meant to coat MDF but its been working so far.

cabby those look great. So you left the MDF in place and coated over? How thick is the concrete? did you pour in place? do you have more pics of the process?

I am curious, does anyone have experience with Granicrete products? I'm interested in hearing about whether the lighter colors yellow...I've heard about some UV protectant...does that work?

A few years ago we were looking for a new office ... and not wanting to sign a five year lease we found a guy who owned a strip of buildings downtown -- he had been trying to sell the whole strip to a big retailer..but the economy was creating problems. One of the building was a Wells Fargo bank ... and they would not stay without a 5 year lease. The whole second floor of the bank was offices .. perfect for our use and position "A" in the city .. WF did not take anything with them.

The owner had a company come in and spray just about everything with various epoxy paints -- and our lunch room and bathroom counters looked just like those counters. They did wall systems/ floors -- even some of the doors. I was really impressed how well it held up -- not all the surfaces are perfectly smooth -- but they were easy to clean. I bet it is the same process as a garage floor.

Not sure do they hold up to heat well if you accidentally placed a hot pot over it? Nick and scratches well?
