Epoxy in sections?

Has anyone done their floor in sections, i.e., do half at one time, the other half later? I have alot of **** in my garage and have no good solution for storing everything when I get around to epoxying my floor. As much as I hate the idea of it, I'm thinking of clearing out 1/2 of the garage, laying epoxy, and once dry, doing the other other half. I'd expect that there will be a visible seem where the two halves meet, however, a seem in the epoxy is better than no epoxy at all!

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I can't see why this wouldn't be possible. Don't try to stop at the exact mid point in the floor. Go to a sawcut or control joint in the floor and the issue of a visible seam goes a away. Unless you are certain that the material is from the same batch, you could end up with two different colors on your floor.

The big headache to me would be prep. Do you really want to leave all of your stuff in there with the amount of water that you'll be using to wash, rinse, and rinse some more? Also a lot of dust if you use a EDCO machine.

Do you have space in the driveway or yard to store a pod for a week or two while you do the entire floor at once? Home depot by me rents them daily, weekly, and monthly. They'll take the pod and store it off site if needed while you do the work.

This would be my suggestion. If at all possible, do it once.

An added benifit would be, what goes back in would be a lot neater and cleaner than what came out.

I have to agree with the responses above... the cleaning/prepping portion of the project goes much better if you can do it all at once.

No problem applying epoxy in sections. It's nice to be able to stop at a joint if possible, but not necessary. I did two colors in my shop, so I had to do it in sections. I used blue painter's tape to keep the lines straight.

Good points. Getting a pod is kind of a PITA though. Unfortunately I've got about 10 major projects planned for this spring...so this may have to wait. I wouldn't have a problem with just leaving everthing outside under a tarp, but I'm afraid of theft. Have to give this some thought.

If you have 10 major projects planned for this spring, wait on doing the floor. It will get scratched / nicked during one of the first 3 of the other 10 projects. I guarantee it - and that will just pizz you off.

Do the other projects first especially if they're for your wife - get her on your side to do the pod / garage project ). Everybody wins and she can't try to make you feel guilty about putting the garage ahead of the house / yard.

Doing epoxy on different days is a something that can be accomplished on a large building depending on the type of floor that you have. If your floor has expansion joints in it those are a great place to stop.

If you don’t have expansion joints it is a real problem with most epoxy products. If you can’t maintain a wet edge you may have to sand the edge before starting again. When you sand the dust from the sanding creates an obvious adhesion problem that is not as easy to clean up as you might think.

There are garage floor tile and garage floor mats designed to give you that epoxy look if epoxy is going to be too difficult.

The Sherwin Williams epoxy I used can be re-coated without scuffing or sanding for up to a week. If you aren't going to pick up where you left off within a week, you'll need to rough-up the surface where ( or "if") you plan to overlap from one section to the next. No biggie.
