Epoxy - is it all the same?

I posted this on another thread, but thought it might have more relevance here. Other post talked about a product called H&C.

I had never heard of H&C so thought I would research it (as I have been doing with all of the epoxy floor coverings this week). I noticed that on their website, they had the phrase "Rolls like paint, wears like steel". This the SAME phrase used on the Supercoat website. I then noted that Supercoat is a product of CASS polymers and milamar adhesives - they are the manufacturer and advertise that they sell their products under private label names.

Long story short, I think the H&C is probably made by the same company that makes Supercoat (colors are same too). Being ****, I even noticed that they simply used the same product images (look at the flakes being in the same spots) but photoshopped the edges.

So, where does all of this lead us? To Sam's Club of course.

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/nav...=5&item=112165

I'm guessing the $69 price at Sam's club FOR THE EXACT SAME PRODUCT is going to be lots less than whatever the H&C (or Supercoat) costs. Supercoat cost $118 on their website for the same kit you can get at Sam's club for $69. You are welcome to send ME the difference in cost.

I hope this helps.

DynoDave asked in the other thread:

"Excellent work mhoffm911! That's a heck of a good price. Looking a the Sams site, it looks like the kit is just the color coat...there's a can of hardener, resin, and "Glaze Coat", but no clear coat. Is that correct?"

DynoDave,

I don't think there is a "clear coat" other than the "glaze coat" is probably the same thing. Their ad says "and a glaze coat for extended durability and gloss". I'm going to do my garage later this month with the kits from Sam's and will make a post about my experience.

Snorvet,

Sorry I did not have the exact product you are using in mind when I stumbled upon my findings. In your case, it might be worth checking with Supercoat to see if they sell the same sealer as H&C and compare prices.

my buddy used supercoat on his shop at his house here in Tx. Its been 2 1/2 years & has not had any hot tire pickup ( he & his wife drive about 30 min home so tires are good n hot), & no lifting from chemicals ( works on a lot of dirt bikes on the side so has the usual abuse of oil, antifreeze, brake clean, carb clean etc... plus welding / plasmacutter abuse... He didnt use the glaze coat just the grey with flakes.. It has a satin type sheen to it .. he didnt want high gloss... I'll prob use the glaze (clear coat)

I am heavily leaning towards it for my 30x40 garage later this month.. Found that sams deal a bit ago... kinda waiting on the temps to go down a bit here in Tx...

Thanks -I'll check, because if its solvent based I can later add coats of Supercoat over the H&C

I bought two of the 'cobalt blue' super kits from samsclub.com for my 485sq ft garage. Each kit is supposed to cover 250sq ft. We'll see this weekend if two kits were enough!

I received both kits today. I'm looking -possibly- at tackling this on Sunday, if not, then definitely the weekend of the 15th.

Pics to follow!

After reading this thread, I did some additional research. I can say with near certainty that the H&C Shield-Crete and Supercoat are the same products. If you look at the instructions below, they are identical (except for the name references, of course).

I went to Sherwin-Williams this morning and the kit was $94.49.
Supercoat is sold on their website for about $80.

Obviously not all epoxies are the same, but I would think that a lot of companies offer private labels to the "Big Box" stores. These stores can purchase at such a volume that they can reduce the price even less than the manufacturers. Be cautious, because sometimes they are "similar" formulas', not the same. Just like generic medicines have the same active ingrediants, they have a host of inactive or inert ingrediants that can affect performance. If the MSDS (material data saftey sheets) are identical, then they probably are the same formula.

Good job notifiying the 'Board' with your research. Keep up the good work.

Rolands,

Thanks for continuing my initial research. I have been swamped with my business and have not got my garage done yet, but still seriously considering Supercoat. I based much of my gut reaction on their parent company, CASS polymers and Milimar coatings. Read up on them and you will find they are pretty big dogs.
