Epoxy on New Garage is Grinding necessary?

Hi,

I ordered a new prefabricated Garage and I am looking to finish the floor. It is about a 6 inch poured slab of concrete. It is not finished so I am looking to apply an epoxy finish. Being that I am in Germany there is no possibility to acid etch the concrete. For some reason this chemical is not permitted here. Nevertheless I am debating whether or not I really need to grind it before applying the primer and then epoxy.

Also is it possible to do 2 coats of epoxy or is it something that only 1 coat can be applied on top of a primer?

Since you can't etch you will need to grind it then. New concrete requires it just as much if not more than older concrete. You need to open up the pores in order for the epoxy to penetrate and establish a mechanical bond.

Thanks for the response, I was on vacation for a while.

I found that I can buy HCL here, they just never seem to mention using it on any epoxy site. They only sell it in a 1/3 concentration instead of 100%.

Quick follow up question.

- Any reason after washing the floor and letting it dry that I would need more than 1/3 concentration to etch the floor?

- How can I protect the walls? Would any plastic type sheet work?

- Back to my initial question, can more than one coat of epoxy be applied like paint or is it simply a 1 shot deal (prep / epoxy)

Need to test concentrations until you get a fizz..

Yes, plastic sheet.

Coat 1: primer
Coat 2: base coat epoxy
Coat 3 optional clear
