Epoxy rebar vs the normal rebar

Hi all.

The epoxy rebar is a bit cheaper. Is it taboo to use this for a reason or? I done see it used much.

I don't know where you are getting your pricing but epoxy coated rebar is typically significantly more expensive than plain. It is used in corrosive environments such as bridge decks but generally isn't necessary for residential applications.

Its also used for applications near the ocean where salt water corrosion is a issue. Yes it is significantly more expensive. If you can get it cheaper then there might be an issue with the manufacturing, possibly the coating is damaged so they can't use it as a specified product so they are just unloading them?

There are new thoughts about it due to failures. Search should result in info. I doubt it is need in any residential setting unless on coast.

Epoxy coated rebar is now thought to NOT be desirable.

Original though was that the epoxy coating would protect the rebar from corrosion from road deicing salts.

Real world results have been showing that the corrosion reduction of the epoxy coated rebar was often only marginally better than plain rebar, because of the coating not being 100% intact after placement. Due to manufacturing pinholes, no coating at all on cut/sheared ends, or coating damage during transport, handling, and placement.

Some documented cases of ECR having to already be replaced/repaired in ~25 years of original installation, when the design of the project was supposed to have a 50+ year lifespan before R&R (or Replacement) was required.

Quebec has 'banned' epoxy coated rebar from public transportation projects.

Florida DOT study showed bare steel corroded in 12-15 years in a 'marine environment', the ECR corroded in 7-9 years.

Maybe the Canadian OP is seeing lower pricing on ECR because suppliers can't sell it for use on any public works projects?

Take a look at fiberglass reinforced polymer FRP rebar. It is light weight, very strong and doesn't rust. Menard's carries it and price is comparable to steel which is $5 for FRP vs. $5.30 for steel. Watch a couple of engineering design YouTube video's on the product. It has good and bad qualities compared to steel.

I am not saying you should use this product as your application needs are unknown to me. Just consider it as another input to your decision making.

I just did my driveway slab with Owens Cornings frp bar. I love this stuff for SOG.
