I'm helping my friend build his shop (1,800 s.f.) and we are at the point of sealing the floor. He doesn't want to spend a fortune but I'm looking for a good epoxy to reccomend to him. What I use is too expensive for his budget.

Secondly are the one part epoxys any good?

He wants a grey floor, nothing fancy. It will be a working garage.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There's no short cuts here. If you are looking to do a paint job with a decent epoxy, it may not hold up well in a "work shop" environment. Typical flooring system that is is spec'd in your situation would be a 1/8 to 3/16 inch double broadcast epoxy polyurethane floor. It's not a one or two man job. Typical cost is $6 to $8 per sqft.
If this is too much, then choose your cheapest paint and expect to repaint every year. Don't waste your money on good epoxy.

I'm just asking WHO makes a good epoxy for this application? Forget price. It's a one man garage with a lift.
Thanks

Black Moon,

I just put down the Rustoleum epoxy in my garage last week. Two car garage took three gallons and about $130. The floor is covered, the epoxy has not fallen off in a short week and it looks nothing like the glossy perfection I imagined...but I was learning as I went so I can't blame anyone.

FYI...

I just found he didn't put down a vaper barrier so epoxy is out of the equation. Thanks for the replies.

Did you use a clear? I just helped my friend put down the Rustoleum professional kit in his hangar. The salesman sold us 4 kits of colour and 4 kits of clear for 1300sq ft. We only used up 2 and a 1/4 kits of the colour, it looked patchy and thin, but we had already flaked it, and the salesman told us it would look fine with the clear coat. We used up nearly all the clear, and it looked alot better, but not perfect. In hindsight we should have done 2 coats of the colour, we certainly had enough to do it. My friend is happy with it though, it looks fine with his two helicopters and benches cupboard etc all moved in..

I would use the Rustoleum again as it was cheap, I would just put two coats down of the colour (probably the clear too) and I think it would look professionally done then...

Even without a vapor barrier, you might want to take a look at SUPERCOAT Liquid Flooring. Run a Calcium Chloride test to see how much moisture is coming through, but chances are good that this will work.

www.SUPERCOAT.us

He decided to just use a driveway sealer. It should work fine. I don't want to risk the effort doing epoxy only to have it come off. The manufs. I spoke with will not warranty w/o vapor barrier.

Thanks
