Hi Yall
I'm planning a trip to Eppys in New York, are there any other tool shops worth visiting in the local area?
I'm from the UK, and I'll be there in November for 5 days.

Sorry, but I'm in upstate NY and never heard of Eppy's. A quick online search reveals a tool store in Brooklyn. It's apparently the only Eppy's.

Have a nice trip!

I've never heard of them and I'm right between both locations (Brooklyn and Howell, NJ). I'll have to check them out sometime.

In terms of other local tool shops, none that come to mind. Most of the quality stuff I buy gets shipped to my door because local options are mostly China made stuff.

This the Link, how far is it from New York City, any help would be really appreciated.

Brooklyn is within New York City, but it can take hours to travel from one end of the city to the other, so the real question would be how far is it out of your way, and to know that, we have to know what you want to visit.
This is the Eppys location.

It is a 25 minute subway ride plus a 10 minute walk from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden /p Prospect Park Zoo for example.

It looks like the last stop on the 2 and 5 trains will land you within 10 blocks of the shop. Either train taken from mid-town Manhattan (Times Sq, Rock Center, etc.) will probably take close to an hour. If you're in lower Manhattan already (Freedom Tower, Wall St, etc.), that shaves about 20 mins off the trip.

Is there a particular reason you're choosing to go to Eppy's? Are you staying in Manhattan? New York City consists of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, and Queens...but many people visiting from outside the US wouldn't know that and use NYC and Manhattan synonymously.
There are still several smaller, family owned hardware stores in the area but larger stores like Lowes and Home Depot have mostly taken over. You can find lowes and home depot in Manhattan as well

Thank you for the advice, I'm definitely visiting as they stock SK hand tools, a brand that isn't available in the UK.

When i lived in NJ, I visited and purchased from their store in Howell quite often. Really nice assortment of tools. I have always liked SK tools.

I have never been to their Brooklyn store.

That is pretty far from Manhattan,, probably where you are staying, non-walk-able distance. I went to the mason store there which is a few blocks away to get some bricks and chimney... PITA of a drive for me.. I wouldn't say that is exactly a touristy area either.. nothing but residential/industrial area mostly... It's pretty safe in the day times, portion of the train ride might scare you a bit, it's different.

Let say from Manhattan bridge as a reference, cross the bridge go straight till 3/4 to the end of Flatbush ave and make a left.. that route would take about 35-45 minutes drive with traffic and lights (lots of lights, traffic cameras and it's a long avenue end to end is about 60 minutes )..I don't think there is a subway there, but there is some bus services... ... .

if you are planning on public transportation. you can check this website out. pretty accurate. 53 minutes travel approximate from an address near Manhattan bridge/Brooklyn Bridge...

http://tripplanner.mta.info/MyTrip/ui_web/customplanner/TripPlanner.aspx

use this two address as your reference. to give you an idea.
to: 809 E 42nd St, Brooklyn, NY 11210
from: 1 Mott St, New York, NY 10013

There is nothing much to see tool wise, why not just enjoy the food and enjoy the site scenery.

+1 Is there any particular reason you want to go to that shop? Your best bet is to order stuff that you want online and have it sent somewhere in the US where you can pick it up for a fee. Also, go hit the big box stores and do non tool related shopping while you are at it. This is from a Canadian point of view.

In the only town in Pennsylvania, Bloomsburg.
Never heard of Eppy's either, used to work in the area. Avoid driving/cabbing until 9:30 am and not around 2:00- 3:30pm, as school buses, teachers and mommy drivers jam up the roads, especially in Brooklyn. Do you have Home Depots and Lowes over in UK ?, pretty good hardware and tool departments, very large stores. Do not bother looking for tools in Manhattan, all small stores and expensive. Manhattan is good for photo equipment.

Bummer, you miss the Halloween parade by a few days, definite bucket list must see, the best parade !!!!

Almost forgot, how about Harbor Freight, often referred to as horror freight. Please do not think our tool culture is bad if you visit one of the stores.

If you're into woodworking with hand tools, Tools for Working Wood has a showroom in Brooklyn.

https://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/more/directions.html

Never been, but they sell some cool stuff.

I totally understand wanting to visit a tool shop- I always try to poke around in hardware stores when we travel, haven't lucked into finding a tool store anywhere we've gone yet.

TFFW is a great suggestion for woodworkers! And blue spruce chisels are a great way commemorate your visit. :)

Hey, the diversion to Brooklyn doesn't have to be all blah ya know! Take the 2 train and get off at the first stop (Clark St.) in Brooklyn. Take a walk up to Juliana's and fill your belly with pizza, then walk it off in the park overlooking the Manhattan skyline on your way back to the 2 train.

And if you need more pizza inspiration, here you go!

No, no, no - you want to go to Ray's for pizza. Just make sure you go to the "original" one!
