Ernst Twist Lock Socket Rail - Review

So I recently ordered 18 twist lock socket rails. 6 in 1/4", 6 in 3/8", and 6 in 1/2"
They arrived and I went ahead and loaded all my metric sockets up. My girlfriend and I sat around putting on all of the stickers on the metric ones.

I got in a motorcycle accident the other day, I'm fine (just a little sore) and the bike is totaled. So today while trying to rest up a bit and recover from my road rash, I figured I would load up all the SAE stuff and tell y'all what I think.

All said and done, I ended up with two spare rails and a bunch of extra socket holders.

Pros:

The twist lock technology is awesome. I loaded up all my big metric stuff and turned the rail upside down and proceeded to bounce the rail around. Nothing, not even a budge. Its the twist lock stuff that convinced me to go for rails from the pegboard craftsman stuff I had been using.

The rails look good. My friend commented that the contrast between the red rails and my black liner / box looked really sharp.

The rails are cheap as dirt for high quality. Including shipping it cost me just about $90 for the 18 rails. They are high quality and American made.

The infinite versatility makes these great. The thing that always turned me off to socket trays, such as the hanson, was that they came with pre-numbered slots. My OCD wouldn't allow me to purchase anything that wouldn't fit all of my sockets in exact order. The labeling system is awesome. It let me arrange my stuff as I wanted and still have a clear indicator of what goes where.

Cons:

Spending 2 hours putting on the little stickers sucked! I must have spent about that long putting on the little stickers. They didn't always want to stick right but in the end I had enough to do both sides of the rail and get everything done. I'm not sure how well the stickers will hold up, we shall see.

Conclusion:

If your interested in a good way to store your sockets and not have to worry about them falling off the rail these rails are the way to go. All of the USA junkies don't have to complain that its made in China, so its approved for all audiences. Its cheap and effective. I would highly recommend these to anyone interested in getting a set.

:rocker:

And of course, pictures!!

I have had them for a couple months and using them day in and day out the twist lock starts to loose its lock. They get to the point where the sockets will just spin. They are still nice though.

I love these rails too. I opted to buy some extra clips and put sockets on both sides of the rail, allowing me to keep shallow/deep sockets for metric/SAE on one rail. Like this:

The twist-clips are awesome.

I like my half and three eights but the quarter inch drives are hard to turn. I also use both sides, saves a lot of room.

Recently bought some wrench rails from Ernst. Good stuff, and the guys are great to deal with. Good customer service, US products.

I've actually been considering the Ernst rails. Thanks to your review, I'll probably be ordering some rails soon.

On a side note, op questioned the durability of the stickers. I've not held or seen these socket rails in person, but before you load up the rails, you could lay all of your sockets out and figure out which ones are going to go where. Once you have it laid out to your satisfaction, you could affix the stickers, and then cover them with a coating of clear nail polish to "seal them in." For those of you that have wives or girlfriends, clear polish should be easy to come by. Single fellas will have to nut up and go by some from the store.

My only issue with doing this would be that they would then have to be laid down in my toolbox. If I was hanging them from a pegboard this would be a great option. Unfortunately, my OCD gets the best of me when it comes to the box.

Glad I posted something that helped someone decide which way to go. I had read a couple reviews and decided at the very worst I can sell them if I don't like them. I'm more then happy and will recommend these to all my friends. Even if the twist lock mechanism eventually wears out I can always buy more clips. Great idea with the nail polish! That didn't even occur to me, I'll have to bug the girlfriend and try that out.

I ordered them from Mechanics Tool Supply. They were out of stock and so it took a few weeks to get here. They should be in stock now though. They were the cheapest by a good bit. It ran me about $4-5 per rail.

The twist-clips are awesome.

That looks like a great space saver for a tool bag/junkyard bag
