ESD Tools needed?

Hi,

need a Torx5 screwdriver for a fix of my smartphone....ok...own Wiha Torxdrivers down to T6, all non ESD. Never needed ESD yet but should I buy some ESD tools for changing a loudspeaker of my old motorola or is the standard screwdriver enough?

esd? electric static discharge. i would think that, battery removed, you would be fine using a standard mini torx set. find a insulated pad for a workspace, and possibly use or find a grounding strap, if you are worried...

For the old loudspeaker no issues. You really only have ESD issues with Solis state devices like IC's, Transistors and some Diodes.

Anti static mat, grounded, a wrist strap also grounded, and if your skin is VERY dry, you may need lotion where the strap is on your wrist.

Tools, metal is OK but some plastics (Handles etc...) generate a lot of static electricity themselves so if you are working on sensitive equipment some will be better than others.

If using "un-certified" tools, ground the tip on a good ground on each use and you should be good to go for most work.

Unless you're in a very dry climate and are constantly shocking things you should be ok. If you are still worried about shocking the phone, take a piece of wire, doesn't matter the AWG, strip both ends, tape one end to your wrist and affix the other to an earth ground, like and earth ground on any household 110 outlet. You have a makeshift grounding strap.

Ok, I'll try it without ESD tools...it's just my smartphone, which I fix in front of my laptop...
