Me and a buddy went to an estate auction last weekend. I was really hoping to pick up a Kennedy tool cabinet that would complete my set, but another guy wanted it a lot more than I did. However, I did pick up a couple of items I could use. I didn't get a steal on either one, but I think I did okay. Got both my items for $450.
First up is a Model 113 Craftsman Industrial drill press. It came with a decent cross-slide vise. I haven't taken the vise off yet to check, but what is visible of the table shows no drill marks.
The second line says 'date or code'. Does the '73' indicate the year it was made?
The other item I ended up with was a horizontal band saw. I've always used a chop saw to cut my metal, but I'm planning on buying a lathe and mill in the future and I want to cut down on abrasive dust in the shop as much as possible.
I've never used a band saw to cut metal before. I understand feed rate, but I'm not sure what tooth count blades I need to have on hand. Most of the material to be cut will be mild steel, but I will cut brass, aluminum, and possibly plastic/PVC at times. Anybody have one of these saws that can give me any tips?
There were a few other things there that fell into the 'would be nice to have' category, but went for more than I was willing to spend on something I really didn't really have a need for. A huge P&H ac/dc/tig machine went for $500. I've already got a Lincoln ac/dc buzzbox and a Lincoln portable that do pretty much all I need, but it would have been nice to have a TIG machine.
