Isn't $3 a little high for something like that at an Estate sale?
They got 1000's of little items in an entire household and a person marks prices at the speed of light as they want to dump everything for profit.
Not to long ago I found an unmarked punch & chisel set so I asked if they would take xyz dollars for it and the lady said SOLD!
Never knew linseed oil not to smell.
Linseed oil is one of those substances that will create spontaneous combustion. You have to be careful with what you do with rags you have used with it.
While I fully agree with keeping the rags under control, I think only the oil marked "boiled" generates heat. The boiled has metallic driers that harden the oil with exposure to oxygen and generate heat.
Many brand new houses with oil finished floors have burned to the ground when people left the used oil rags on the floor and left for the day.
I bought a can of linseed oil at a junk store many years ago. It was an almost full can. don't remember what I paid but it wasn't much. Finally got around to using some of this a few years later. It had turned rancid. An awful odor. Ended up throwing it away.
I never knew linseed oil could turn. Guess I learned one. Don't know how many years old this was but it was old.
Maybe a good idea to smell what's in that can of linseed oil?
The top of the cap says "Raw." ..............
You have any pictures of your Heywood Wakefield table? I like HW. I have several pieces myself. The top of the cap says "Raw." I don't think the top was ever removed. When I screwed off the top I really had to pry the induction sealing off which looked brand new. I smelled the Linwood oil and it barely had an odor (It was brown in color) I hear talk of using Linwood oil so when I saw it, I decided to get it in case I needed it for a future wood project. I was tempted to put some on my antique Heywood Wakefield Dining Room Table, but will try it on some spare wood to see how it acts first.
$3 for an old can like that is a good price, imho. I've got several "cone top" quart cans of solvent that are pretty cool.. I'll take picts and share once I get home.. I think most purchased for $3 or lower... They all tell a story.
Not sure what to do with old linseed oil if the can is full and the product is bad (coagulated, rancid, or ??). Most latex paint I just pour out over the ground to let dry (or leave open in the can in the garage until dry). Fortunately, I've not had that problem with linseed type products...
