Estate sale score

Today I had the morning off and happened upon an estate sale. There was the workshop of an obvious machinist skilled tinkerer and among some other small scores (Nicholson files, homemade vise, homemade sine plate (more photos to come)) was this surface plate beneath a pile of other goodies. I carried it up the stairs where we haggled on price. I wanted to give her more money for it and she insisted me ridding her of the chore of moving it was payment enough! But here it is, Its nothing Bcbloc sized but it's definitely the finest machining product I've ever been in possession of. All in all I left there with about 300 lbs of metal for less than 50 dollars...

That's one of the best scores I've seen on here. The table it's on looks nice to..

Thank you, funny you mention the table though. It's a 4x4 rolling Lyon table that I got out of a dumpster at a TWA museum!

Lol I notice there was a post here that was deleted linking to another thread where a guy got jumped on preatty harshly for that. I forgot I had clicked on it and later opened my phone i read through them. I though they were responses to me and to be honest I was hovering over the delete account button! Luckily I noticed the date on one of them and slowly climbed down off the ledge!

I wanna know how YOU carried THAT up the stairs?

Well I'd guess it weighs around 140. I carried it up before talking to them about it. Needless to say I was relieved to hear them agree meaning my effort had not been in vain lol. It does have some nice handles built right into the side of it. And dont worry these photos were taken the morning after and I was NOT bare footed when carrying the 2 inch plate or the surface plate. When I was reviewing that photo the though of that on top of my foot came up several times! It would probably be a toe removal and I'd probably have to change my name to something like "the other toeless welder" lol

Is the riveted tag an old property tag of some sort? Curious to know where it may have originated from.

It came from the Vendo Corporation in Kansas city Missouri which is where I live. Best I can tell they are still around in one form or another. From what little research I've done they left Kansas City either in 56 or some time in the 70's

Yes, a pic of the oval riveted plate, please. This is used to check pieces for warpage? Like cyl heads?

Yes it's used for also for some precise layout as well. It seems to coated in something like maybe fluid film or cosmoline or something. It's far beyond the level of precision used in my garage!

OK, I see the manufacturer's plate and the company who bought the piece has an inventory control # oval plate.

The Challenge Machinery Company has been an innovator in cutting equipment for almost 150 years. Our achievements include the invention of the original paper cutter in 1887, the first paper drilling machine, the first hydraulic paper cutter, the first programmable paper cutter, and more recently the first fully automated programmable three-knife book trimmer.

The little oval number plate was intended to keep someone from walking off with it. Gravity was already doing that !

I find tags like them all the time on office furniture I buy at Estate Sales. Some of them list the company name and a number and others are just a number.

Cheers

I would venture that the number tag was an asset tag. In the factory I worked at we had to inventory all 'assets' every year or two for the accounting dept.

Nice haul on the equipment. Take a bit of alcohol to the plate and clean a small place and see if the coating is colored. Plates like this with handles were often used for spotting in the scraping process.
