Picked up this vice from the basement of my parents home while in the process of cleaning it out. On the side is the word COMB and No 64. Can anyone shed some light on the history of this vice?

It's an "Oswego Tool" or "Sawyer Tool" No.64 combo vise, depending on the opposite casting of the vise.

Oswego Tool, made the "Smith Pattern" combo vises for many years, then in the 1920's they changed the name to "Ontario" with different model #'s as seen in the catalog scan below. I've included a photo of an Oswego Tool "Smith Pattern" No.2 vise, which is the same, but earlier version of your vise.

Very nice vise!

No picture needed, look at the fixed jaw side of the vise, see the 2 steel plates under the jaw with a stepped pattern cut in them? Should be a third one that mounts to the sliding jaw, only difference is it is sometimes longer, which is why they were often removed. When installed, it prevents work from being dropped down lower in the jaws of the vise.
