can anyone guess from this picture how big this garage is? like can you look at the doors and know they're a standard size or something and make a reaonable guess based on that? i'm buying this house and the garage *seems* to be a good size, but i'm curious to know about how big it actually measures without driving out and measuring it... thanks in advance if you can help!

Is there a prize for the right answer??? My guess is 20 x 20, and that's exterior. Take away about 6" for each wall and that leaves you with 19' x19' or 361' sq. of floor space.

no prize, just that warm feeling you get from helping someone start to think about planning a garage space! i thought 2 car garages were a "standard" size, but i think that applies more to new construction attached garages than old detached garages from the 1930s. i've been in the garage a bunch of times, but i've never actually measured it and i'm curious to see if the jeep, motorcycle, wife's car, and work bench area will all fit inside.

My figuring would be 20' across, 17 1/2' to the roof peak with a 9/12 pitch roof.
The depth is a bit harder to calculate, but I'd guess it to be 16' to 18' front to back. That's based on your statement about it being a 30's era garage.

The origional garage on my property was built in '46 and had 3 bays. The two ends were 16' deep and the center was 17 feet. Quite a few cars made between then and now wouldn't have fit in it.

Well, there appears to be about 1" on each side of the 2 single doors & another foot between them....so, I'm guessing 18' outside dimension across the front.....so, its probably not much deeper than it is wide...yep, maybe 20'x20'.

The roof pitch might be 8/12 or 9/12 at most but if its trusses, that's irrevalent.

She's not what I'd consider a "good size" - more like modest if you own anything larger than an MG Midget or Mazda Miata

i know the house is a 30's era house, but i'm only assuming the garage was built at the same time. my Dodge magnum is about 16' long, but it's a company car so it can sit outside and rot for all i care. my wife drives a toyota corolla (small) and my main concerns for the garage are my old jeep CJ7 (tall, but short and narrow) and my honda interceptor (small).

visually, it seems clear that the vehicles will all fit (minus the magnum of course), but as far as extra work benches, tool storage etc, it's tough to judge...

thanks for all the help so far!

20'x20' Maybe a bit more shallow than 20'. I would say those are definitely 8' wide garage doors.

2x4 are 8 feet so for using as much wood as possible i would think it is 20 wide and probably 22 long some built with a " lean too " on the end. it is a piece as an after thought when they realized the bumper would not fit in the garage so they built a 4 foot piece on the end to make do. usually not high enought for a 6 foot person to stand in

Doors look to be standard 8'x8' with 2' between and 1' on either side - giving 20' wide as people are saying. Looks to be about the same depth. I'd say it is going to be pretty tight for two vehicles and a motorcycle with little room left over for storage/work space.

well i went back out today for the inspection and it's 20x20 interior dimension. approx 21x21 outside. the floor is a mess with cracks, and depressions and things, but it's structurally sound. The electrical service coming in is a mess, which is actually good because it's a good excuse to update it with more outlets, dedicated circuits, etc. ("but honey, we have to bring it up to "code" :pimpflash )

It's not a huge garage, but it's mine and should hold my toys:
