Happy New Year Everyone!!

So I'm continuing my structural welding project on my car and here is the Structural Work (I hope this works-my first time doing links!). I went and got estimates (only one-can't find anyone other than the one local shop) and I have to say I wasn't happy with their approach on estimating. I asked for a quote (given extensive pictures only) and they said we only quote by project and not hourly. They started out with $15-20k and stated it could be more depending extent of rust but not less. I told them I would need to get loan if went over X amount and the bank wouldn't like an open ended amount. They refused to do that. So I'm curious on what should be a reasonable amount to expect and what questions I should ask and when to walk away. One of the things they said it would take 40 hrs of work to remove the interior so they can begin to weld. I've been around the shop some and seen one person dismantle an interior in less than 8 hrs so I almost want to call B.S. on that alone. I also told them i would get the pans and rockers and they wouldn't have to fabricate them.

I did talk to someone also who was retired and said it should be done for half that price. He said they didn't want the work however I told him they said could start the work in 3 weeks which led me to believe that wasn't the case.

Should a shop quote project by the hour or by job? What should be red flags and expected?

TIA
