email estwing those photos and provide an eBay link. if it's fake, they won't be happy.

Doesn't look fake to me. I have purchased a couple recently from HD that have identical (lower quality/poor finish) handles. The paint on the metal of a claw hammer is new to me but it does look like the same color used on the metal of an Estwing drilling hammer I have, right down to the overcoat on the top of the handle. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they have lowered quality or produced an economy line for a specific vendor.

It looks legit to me too. Like geojag, I have never seen a claw hammer with the blue paint, but I also have the same drilling hammer.

I'll be VERY surprised if Estwing says that's a fake.

I'm pretty sure my dad has an estwing floating around that looks just like that, I'll have to try to find it and snag a pic

Ebay is rife with this activity, and it's horrible.

Did the seller post a picture of a geniune Estwing hammer? If so, that may help your claim. If you can demonstrate that you did not receive the product specified. Otherwise, Paypal may require you to prove that the hammer is counterfeit. As tool people we may consider it obvious, but it might not be so obvious to non-tool people. It might be beneficial to reach out to Estwing.

Also, bear in mind that however unlikely, it is possible that the seller was unaware that they sold a counterfeit product. Give the seller a chance to make it right, which it sounds like you may have already done.

Persistence and calm is the best tack, here.

Good luck.

Can't comment as to whether its a fake or not. I own several estwings and none of them have a sloppy looking finish like that. If its not a fake, I'd still be very disappointed with that fit and finish. Estwing produces a lot better then that.

I have a couple of 12oz exactly like that, they were sold as seconds and have less than perfect forgings, I have no reason to believe they are not real, all the details are the same as on a store bought of the same age, handle material is correct and wears as you would expect, those have been around a while as the labels are an older style than what is current. I have seen plenty for sale finished exactly like this. IMO if it were fake it would look right from a distance where as this is obviously wrong at first glance, even though its genuine.

That is a real Estwing. Back in the 90's there was a store close to me selling them. I think they may be cosmetic seconds(bad polishing or grinding) hence the paint. Vaughn hammers paints their blue and calls them Grayviks.
Other than looks there is nothing wrong with that hammer, the nails doesn't care what is hitting it.

You need to be more careful before you start accusing Ebay sellers of counterfeit fraud.

If a widget is counterfeited, then there's usually plenty of info out there to help you confirm or deny it.

Another vote for factory seconds.
Company's would sell them in the old days too but they'd grind the name off.

I think it's real, just use the damn thing it's a hammer! The grip will smooth out and the yellow paint will wear off anyways, unless it's going in your fine china cabinet

Hit something, Estwings have a very distinctive sound. That handle is most definitely an Estwing grip though.

What was it? Like 20 bucks? Why Ebay for a hammer?

Doesn't look very fake to me.

Perhaps the seller listed the wrong part number. What do the numbers on the tag say?

Estwing color differences- Photo one the underside gray of a claw hammer.
photo two the blue of a ball peen hammer.
photo three another ball peen without the blue color added.

No the hammer is not fake even with me being color blind I have seen all gray Estwing hammers in the past, it might as someone pointed out be a second but even then I am not sure.

Hope the pictures help you out I bought several of the ball peen hammers and the largest one in the picture above came without color but the others in the group all had color added.

Just as an after thought if you give them a call at 815-397-9558 and send them a picture of your hammer or show them this post they can better explain to you about the added color.

OP please post back to us what they tell you over the phone.

The ones I saw at Home Depot looked like Harbor Freight rejects.

I know I have seen Estwing drilling hammers with all gray heads that look like they were just dipped in paint and I have seen them painted the nice dark blue color with polished steel striking faces. I think it might just be a retailer requested option depending on what price point they are trying to achieve.

I've seen both the dipped grey, and the highlights of that nice metallic blue. There's also the fully bare metal variety, and the ones that were painted in clearcoat with polished unfinished striking surfaces.
They've made a bunch of versions over the years.

Those look pretty beat up. I don't think i've seen one with such a poor finish.

Looking at the ebay link it doesn't look much different to be honest. I would just use the hammer, you got it for a low price so that's to be expected considering the source. You could choose a nicer one if you were willing to pay more in person so that's the trade-off and risk of third party sellers you take.

I bought one of the grey-painted Estwing hammers years ago, don't remember if it was from HF or a big-box store. Fit and finish wasn't up to their usual standards, but it's fully functional. Probably a factory second that Estwing blew out the back door. Think I paid 1/2- 2/3 the price of the shiny-finished ones.

It's a Estwing claw hammer fer chrissakes- use and abuse it and it will give you years of service. If you bought it to hang on the wall, go select the pick of the litter at your local hardware store.

Why did you buy a common claw hammer on eBay anyway?- because it was cheap. Now you know why.
