Estwing fraud on ebay

Hell, the price isn't even that good.

Amazon has them nice-n-shiny new for $20 with prime shipping. This took me 1 minute to find (wifi's acting up).

You got a legitimate hammer and it'll work great. Price hunting however, that was lacking.

Don't look fake to me. Estwing makes a lot of hammers. This might be an import. I think they're taiwan, I've seen them at home depot. Could just be a lower end us model.

Can't blow up the pictures but didn't see anything "non-estwing" about it and I am always enraptured by hammers when I go to stores.

Edit: gray painted estwing certainly exists at retail. I saw them on clearance at sears for like 80% off paint scratched to bejesus and back a couple months back. They probably don't polish the heads so they can sell them cheaper. My guess. I have to look at the import ones at home depot because I don't remember if they were polished or painted.

Looks to me like someone used brakleen on the handle. Someone probably used it a couple of times put brakleen on the handle and realized it ate the handle. Or it is a second or factory reject. Either way its a hammer its meant to hit things its not going to look nice for long if you plan to use it.

It's a real Estwing and it is a hammer. Use it twice and you will never know the difference.

And here's an eBay auction with a similar shingler's hammer.

They all appear to be from the mid-1990s forward.

I agree they look bad, but they're almost certainly genuine.

Estwing hammers work on standard and METRIC shingles? WTF, I have never had trouble with metric nails. It is amazing, our house was built with IKO 'metric' shingles that I think came from Illinois and I know the local plant sell to the US.

Metric was the old term for Architectural shingle, at least that is what we called them when they were introduced.

It was fairly innocent on his part I'd guess. If you're buying hammers on the internet you probably don't get out much to see the variances in a brand; definitely a possibility in more rural areas. The high end estwing stuff is real nice looking the cheaper stuff not so much but still good hammers. I mean you're smacking stuff with it not framing it for worship; all it takes is one rusty rotor smack and it's not going to be smiling pretty no more.

When th OP made his original post, he clearly was asking a question (see those two marks after the last word?? - those are question marks).

So when others make accusations about the OP making an accusation - well let's just say it's not right. He never accused, he asked. Personally I own a few Eastwings and I can see where he might be confused about what is an isn't an Eastwing. Obviously what he received in no way reflects the quality of the Eastwings we see in stores, so it's easy to question its authenticity.

Having said that, not knowing for certain, I would still bet it's a factory second (although as bad as it looks, it may be a factory 3rd if ever they existed).

Anyway, before I digress, I just hope the GJ patrons remember that almost no one joins this forum in hopes of bashing anyone else or bashing a brand just for kicks.

That's my 2 cents (with a quarter added to adjust for inflation).

So I can officially confirm that Estwing used to generate a lot of seconds. I know this because we used to buy them. They would distinguish their seconds by painting the metal grey, just like the hammer shown in the pic. We actually still have a few of them floating around here at the store.

Not sure if Estwing is still generating these. I haven't seen them come up in the surplus market in some time. From what I've heard, the seconds they do generate get shipped to Europe to try and remove them from the US market, but that may or may not be true.

Comparison shot of an E3-20C (second and first). I believe the only issue with the seconds was that they had cosmetic blemishes in the finish of the metal that Estwing was unhappy with. Hence the paint job.

I don't think anyone was offended - I certainly wasn't anyway. Once you got the right info, you stood up and admitted your mistake and did what needed to be done. No one could ask any more than that of you.

When I was looking online to see what I could learn about these, I found most of the ones I saw for sale on the UK eBay site, so that may well be true.

Not a lot of flaming on this thread, just pointed responses to an original post that has since been heavily edited after ~30 replies....

To be perfectly honest i edited my original post to what it is now because what i originally wrote was an accusation and I didn't mean for it to be that way. I was making a comment because I honestly thought i had been given a fake product. I didn't mean to sound so harsh. I honestly thought that I had been given a knock off product and I posted these pics on here to get feedback. I never intended my remarks to be vicious. Again, apologies to anyone offended. It was completely my mistake. The seller received his money and everything has been squared away in this transaction.

I don't think anyone was offended by your original post, keep in mind we get a lot of hit-and-run posts where the OP makes some contentious claim and then never comes back with any clarification or closure on the matter. (or worse yet, makes an inflammatory statement and then announces he's done with the thread...)

Kudos to you for circling back and letting us know that everything turned out OK- for you and the seller on eBay. Enjoy your Estwing hammer- I have about 15 out them, from a 7-ounce trim hammer to a 5-lb sledge. Love 'em all- even the three that are painted grey...

Just remember one thing, Jeremy. Price hunt more. Never take that deal as being the best until you've shopped around a bit.

I may not have much money, but I LOVE shopping. I just don't buy much (kinda why I'm on this forum... drool).
