So I lost my RIP hammer about two months ago - long story... I don't do a lot of carpentry work and only really need a hammer for projects around the house - nothing major...

If I worked all day every day with my hammer, I would agree with you... But I don't. And I sooo love things that look and feel great. This hammer does just that. It's beautiful and feels so good in my hand.

When i was a kid i had a hatchet with the leather handle. Like a typical kid, i lot it in the woods somewheres. I wonder if they still make it? Id love to have one but all i see are the elastomer handle hatchets.

Ryan.Those leather grip Estwings are nice,hey your not making a living with it so it will last a long time.As you have stated it feels good as well.When selecting a tool one looks at it's reputation and then a fella has to like the feel.For me it has to feel like an extension of your hand/arm.

Estwing still makes leather handled camp axes, which are small like a hatchet. Sears has 'em on their website.
Next time I go to Sears, I will have to feel their hammers.

Looks like something you would use if you had a block of wood.....................and didn't have a car or motorcycle to work on.

I had a piece of wood once. Didn't like it, too soft and brown. Wouldn't throw sparks either......I threw it out.

I have 20 oz and 22 oz blue handle Estwings that I use at work every day. I also have a very old 16 oz leather handle that I use occasionaly in the shop. The handle is getting a little loose....I use it less often because of this.
I think I'll go hammer shopping this week-end...

My grandfather had one just like that, thing must be 40-50 years old. When he passed away about 10 years ago, I took it from his garage. It's now in my garage hanging up not being used any longer.

Only claw hammers I have are Estwing. Many years ago (60's) I had one of the leather handle ones - went thru a house fire and charred the leather handle. Wrapped it with electrical tape and used it for another 20 some years. Finally lost it (stolen?). Now have one which the peened over retainer came loose - sitting in the box waiting repair, been there for several years. Also love the smaller (blue handle) one for finish work, as well as the framing sized one. And of course this:

I used to live a couple blocks from where they are made, knew the guy that owns the place, and had several friends that worked there. At one point, I had at least 20 different framing, ball peen, masons, malls, and camp axes. What I have found amazing, as some of you guys have pointed out, is how fast they grow feet and disappear.... I think I have about half of what I had in the 1990s.

I love the leather handled Estwings.

My Dad has one that's probably at least forty years old and while it has long lost it's original shine it has beautiful patina and still works as good as new.

I bought one last year, hopefully I still have it in forty years!

+1 on the Axe. I have that one as well, it's perfect for when we go camping and have to knock down gathered firewood to a manageable size.

I've purchased 4 of those over the years. One for the home shop, one for work, two for friends.

Its my "go-to" hammer of choice, and I own something like 30 hammers just at my home shop. Each one different, with a different job. Nothing uncommon, just for varied kinds of work.

I have the blue handled ball-peen Estwings in every size and I LOVE them. They are excellent, super well made, perfectly balanced and just beautiful hammers over all. Estwing may not be cheap, but it is definitely worth the money.

I have the 20 ounce straight claw hammer with the blue grip and the 22 ounce brick hammer... both have endured heavy usage and hold up great. I like the look of the leather wrapped handles too, although I think the blue grip is more comfortable to use as its shock absorption seems to be higher. Still... that leather wrapped campers axe is something i'd definitely consider. The leather wrapped stuff I feel would be fine to use and surely attractive, just so long as you are not planning on using it heavily every day. I'd say this primarily because if you are going to be using it for many hours you'd probably want to get the best shock protection you can get to save your arm

That's a gorgeous hammer Ryan. Reminds me of my grandpa. he had a leather handled hammer that he used day in and day out for many many years. you couldn't really tell by looking at it, but if you grabbed it, you could feel that it had kinda formed to his hand.

I use a Estwing 30 oz framing hammer and a 20 oz claw hammer. both I have had long enough the blue rubber is almost as hard as the steel

Favorite hammer of all time is a 20 oz straight claw Estwing, I also have a 16 oz leather, 2 or 3lb mini sledge, leather handled axe, roofers hammer, mason hammer and they are ALL Estwings.

I have had my Leather handled Estwing for 20 years now. Back then I was doing a ton of finish carpentry. I like the leather better than the cheesy looking blue ones. I took the time one evening rencently to refurb my handle. Got a good soaking of linseed oil and turp then after that dried some marine spar varnish. Looks like a million bucks. Love that hammer.
