Welcome to GJ...

Yes is the simple answer to your question... There are lots of European tool manufacturers.
You have to remember, Europeans were building stuff long before we got on a boat
and turned ourselves into Americans.

As regards to generally accepted top quality automotive type tools, a few to get you going...

Hazet
Facom
Stahlwille
Gedore
Britool (made in England)
King ****
Beta
Wiha
Felo
Wera

I would search out the "Tools from the old world" thread
There is about 8 hours worth of pages on that thread to really sink your teeth into
and lots and lots of different tool maufacturers, both past and present.

Happy hunting.

I've used the top Euro brands like Stahlwille, Elora, Facom, Hazet, and several others I'm forgetting.

The quality, finish, etc. consistently beats the USA-made brands. For example, Hazet beats the hell out of Craftsman, and is slightly better than Snap on in most tools.

Knipex puts the shame to Channellock.Knipex's diagnal cutters stay sharper longer, the cobra pliers are much easier to adjust.

Sorry Mercucho, I have to correct you, Bahco is (or was) a swedish tool brand. Now a part of SnapOn Europe (SNA). But right, most of the tools are now imported from Spain (wrenches, pliers), Portugal (files), Taiwan (Ratchets, sockets) or Argentina. Some pliers are even from PRC...
IMHO old Bahco stuff simply rocks, but the new stuff - the files and saws are good...maybe overpriced - sockets etc. I can find the same Taiwan quality cheaper.

Bahco web site:

"Bahco products are manufactured in numerous production plants owned by the group in Europe, in Sweden, Spain, Portugal, England..."

It's true what you say, but a good portion of their tools is produced in Spain.

Some Volvo cars are build in Belgium, some in China, but as a Scandinavian I would still consider it a swedish brand...
It´s the same story that´s discussed in multiple threads about Snap On and COO. Big companies are great, because they allows big money for R&D, but the downside is lost obligation to the heritage. Thats why i personally prefer to buy german tools now, from family owned works, like Stahlwille, Gedore or Hazet. They tend to keep most production in-house.
For me, a Bahco tool should state "Made in Sweden" in the forging. And why that silly Fish & hook logotype? Was never on the tools before Sandvik aquired them in the 90´s. That´s an example of marketing people trying to grow a heritage that close to nobody heard of, but if you repeat the story again and again, it becomes the truth. My Bahco tools from the 70´s or the 80´s has no logotype except for the name. Some of my older "Bergs" has a shark logotype....but no hook. What SNA tells by the story is something about reliability, but it doesn´t makes sense, since most of the swedes that used to do the tools are now unemployed. Now, the the tools are made by spanishmen, russians and other nationalities, who had never heard of neither Bahco or Fish & hook, before they got the job ...so come on, heritage? Sorry, i´m such an old, grumpy man...

Bahco makes generally good tools (in various countries) but, of course, does not fall short of the German brands you mention.

Hazet, Gedore and Stahlwille they are the Rolls & Royce of tools. I have many tools these brands.

However, I believe that you can not judge the quality of a tool by the country where it was manufactured.

As Rico so well put it - YES!

There are a load of European and British tool makers out there, many producing some nice stuff (a few producing some right old tat) but much of it never reaching the U.S.A.

I used to love visiting the U.S.A, mainly because I could pick up decent tools at reasonable prices! I'm quite surprised how quickly the mid priced decent stuff (such as Craftsman) has vanished and been replaced by cheap Chinese and mid price Taiwanese, so I can well understand your frustration!

Firstly, I'd try to track down the decent U.S.A. made stuff that's still out there! I'm thinking of makers such as Wright, S.K, Wilde and suchlike, all producing decent stuff, but requiring a bit more effort to source than wondering into Sears!

If you still fancy some European stuff, here's some that I use! (When I'm not using U.S.A. made tools) Some of it (such as PB Swiss or Maun) is a notch above anything else. Other stuff is simply better value here in the U.K. (It may not be in the U.S.A.) All is of good quality

Screwdrivers - PB Swiss (only for metric size drivers)

Pliers - Elliott Lucas (British), Knipex (German), Maun (British)

Punches - Eclipse (British) or Priory (British)

Allen Keys - PB Swiss

Hammers - Footprint (British)

Soft Hammers - Thorex (British, Huge range of sizes and materials)

Wrenches - Stahlwille (German), Hazet (German), King **** (British) or Saltus (German)

Socket Wrenches and handles - Stahlwille or Hazet again, both highly recommended)

Finally, I've attached some pictures that I took for another thread about British tools showing Elliott Lucas Pliers, Maun Pliers, Eclipse and Priory Punches (with a Footprint hammer) and King **** wrenches!

Don't forget that there are some very good tools coming out of Japan too! Tools from makers such as Ko Ken and KTC are very usable!

Mercucho, you´re right...I have Bosch tools from Malaysia, AEG from Czech republic and Taiwan, lots of other stuff from all over the world. Good tools are always nice. I just have this "something from my childhood-thing" with Bahco. Got to get over it...

found a pic of Roverbo :D
