Ever buy a tool for no reason at all?

I've bought tools because they were on sale, not that I needed them. I bought them because they looked cool. I've bought them because the seller needed the cash, and I had spare cash. I guess the above reasons could be considered "no reason at all". I'm sure most wives would say I bought tools I didn't need.

I just purchased a shlf80a off the snap on guy because it was on special an I have wanted one for quite sometime.

Now that I have it, I have had to reconfigure my ratchet drawer as it is to big to fit length or width ways and now I have no clue what I am ever going to do with it as I am not a professional mechanic.

All of that said.... I love it

I picked up a SLF80 for cheap at a pawn shop and its awesome for turning motors over via the crank bolt. I am also just a weekend warrior but its been awesome.

I find I always have a reason:

- I need this tool for task X.
- This tool might come in handy if I ever do task Y.
- I want this tool just because.

A 3/4" ratchet can come in handy, you can use it instead of a 1/2" and a cheater bar. I would never buy a new one if I didn't have a use for it but if I found a used one for a reasonable price I would buy it.

Sure. I don't usually buy expensive tools or power tools for no reason at all. I guess I could say the same for hand tools too. Occasionally however, I just feel like buying a tool that catches my eye at a flea market, garage sale, etc. Most of the time the tool is used and costs less than ten dollars. I might not have a specific use for the tool, or may never even use it, but I just felt like buying it. For example, about a two weeks ago, I stopped at a garage sale and bought a Utica Tools 6" adjustable wrench. I don't need another adjustable wrench and rarely use the ones I already have. I just needed a "tool fix" and bought it. So, I brought it home (like so many other tools before it), put a couple drops of oil on the moving parts, worked the adjustment screw with my thumb a few times, and then hung it on the peg board with the other adjustable wrenches. Why did I do that? But I do it all the time.

Well the reason you buy it might be OCD, you have to have every tool out there. Collecting things is very impulsive. Also, it makes you feel good, like a warm cuddly feeling when you look at your tools nice and snugly resting in their tool box. jeez I just bought a 5th vintage snap on tool top box, kra 58b. why? my wife needed it as a jewelry box. but she said she didn't want it. that doesn't matter she's getting it and will learn to like it. and i'll get to look at it in our bedroom. evil laugh, wahhh, ahh, ahh, hahahhahhah !!!!!! Listen, you need every size Proto saltus wrench from 1/4" up to 1" you need them!! You don't just need every possible universal socket in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive, you need it in 6 point and 12 point. good luck my friends in your gathering and hunting for tools.

look buddy you're making a big mistake. Buying that ratchet will only start you on a slippery slope (like so many others you see here who have already fallen victim to).

You would be surprised. Axle nuts and Pitman arm bolts are always over 1"

I can almost always justify a tool purchase. I'm a house owner, mechanical/marine engineer and a car guy, so I can always find some hypothetical job in which any given tool would be nice to have.

aren't those like $800 ???.. I wouldn't buy it unless I need it. I have a no-name 3/4 driver that I got for $20 at a garage sale. I use it for axle nuts and thats about it.

thats advanced planning if you ask me! now you have a reason to hunt up a cross cut saw to sharpen and reset the teeth on. but you will also need the saw sharpening vise to go along with it.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately?), the enablers on this board have inspired me to "pull the trigger" and go ahead with the purchase Signcrafter really finalized the decision for me when he provided me with an elusive reason that I can use should I start feeling bad about giving in to the compulsion. I stopped passing on stuff I don't need because I can't forget about the huge deals I passed up.

• The Craftsman Lathe I missed by just seconds because the baby started crying.
• The Baldor Grinder I passed on because I did not have room in the garage.
• The Craftsman block grinder with an original Craftsman stand (very cool stand)

A couple of weeks ago I passed on a brand new 2" Wright combo wrench for about $60. It was over two feet long. I would never use it but it sure would have been fun to have around the house. In a few months I'll probably run into a 2" nut that needs to be turned.

Got a couple of bench mounted Ford press looking things..one is screw action, one is a locking lever with a screw thing on it. Got both of them and a shingle lifter for $5.

There is always a reason...Because it is there is my favorite.

On Amazon, you can get those Wiha insulated pliers on the cheap sometimes. I just bought the smaller linesman pair for 20 bucks so I could check it out. It isn't like I need any more pliers except by some leap of rationalization (an in-the-house toolbox? a toolkit for the other car?).

Next thing you know, I'll get a fixation on 6 point combination wrench sets.

I have been buying a couple of those as well, they are really nice Swiss pliers that jump around in price from high 30's to low 20's. When they are low they are a very tempting deal.

I got my grandfather's saw sharpening equipment, including crosscut saw tooth setter, drag set gauge, saw vice, and a couple of worn out files. I remember my dad taking his half crosscut saw (3.5 ft) and getting my granddad to sharpen it. He had graduated from a carpentry school sometime around 1909, and that was a long time before power saws were invented. His father, my great grandfather also graduated from a carpentry apprentice program, I have pictures of both of them with their saw I think they had made in school. I have a old wooden chest that he had made in school with a few planes and saws he had made. Treasures that will go down to my grandson eventually..

You paid way too much. I picked up a 3/4" Proto Ratchet for $15 in thirft shop where they only get thins from mini storage units. I also Got a Husky for $15 at the swap meet. I got them about 2 months apart. I have never paid more than $6 for a 3/4" drive socket and I have them all the way up to 2-1/2".

I got a 1-5/8" and a 1-3/4" both craftsman 3 weeks ago for $3 each. They wre new. I have been buing this way for 50 years.
