Ever feel like your garage will never be done/useable?

Lately i feel like my garage will never be done! (atleast useable) I have spent the last few months devoting every spare minute to the garage. I am ready to get the projects back on track and the garage still needs insulated, drywalled, service entry ran/hooked up, and siding... lol

Lately i have time from work but have Holiday stuff going on....

I guess im just feeling the rush because from March to September i will not have time to do anything but work and sleep, and i still have some projects to finish up besides the garage.

Although i know myself well enough to know it will never be "DONE" hahahahahaha

i feel you man. i started in september, It looks like a garage but i would hate to tear into a motor in there. Real nice dirt floor id love to do a set of headers on a trans am than finish this barn. On a side note did you figure out how to cap the ends of your over hangs. Im in the same delema.

Man, can I relate to that sentiment! Got the shell up and concrete floor of my new shop done this past summer by a builder. Since then I've been trying to get the wiring installed, air and water piping run, some interior framing done and the ceiling insulated ... it's all taking forever trying to do it myself!! And I don't have the electrical service or water lines run yet!

Always seems to be something interfering with progress ... family commitments, travel, wife's projects, general house & yard upkeep, etc., and, yeah, holidays!

Sounds like your at the same point as i am in my garage, working by yourself takes alot more effort and self motivation also... I started the end of october and have done most all of it my self and occasional help of friends.

I dont have time to procastinate.. never had much of a problem with it. Sometimes i find it hard to take a moment to eat lunch when i get working, every minute counts! hahaha

You are right i just need to relax and enjoy the build, i have always had a problem with that... when i start a project i am OCD on it till its done and always seem to start 2 other projects befor i fish the one i started! HAHAHAHAHAHA

FWIW, I own a house in Upstate NY, because I got engaged to a girl many years ago. It is 181 years old, and it will never be ''done''. House time is different when you have the rest of your life to get there.

In my case I got the shell up and moved in. Got the garage doors on and waited. Added the shed addition and waited. Got the wiring in and waited. Did the insulation... Did the drywall...

Every time I went to a new phase, everything came out and was tarped in the yard. I hoarded materials, and hanging on to stuff was hard sometimes, but it paid off.

If you are on a budget, get your wiring in, and get in. Then do the outside when you have the time/money. I paid a guy 900.00 to put the service panel in, and wired a lot of the rest myself. Because I was not in a hurry, I was able to score some interesting stuff, cabinets, trim, shelving, all for little or no money.

13 years later I have a garage, a studio and a tractor shed. Maybe I have three months total time in working on it in my spare time.. It was definitely worth it, but now my priorities are different. My house takes precedent over my car life.

I still have a car life though.

If you told me twenty years ago that I would someday talk about scoring a great lawnmower the same way I talk about my cars, I would have laughed at you. Now, my lawn mower has it's own parking space, next to the snow blower.

Count your blessings, and start looking at the big picture as being part of your future. A fire hose on a rock for five minutes won't have the effect a tiny trickle has over time. As a guy used to hammering out projects, it took me a while to appreciate this...

Know the feeling only too well

Still in rented accommodation, cant do anything permanent to the garage without upsetting someone.

Have the constant overwhelming urge to f**k my life finances and buy a house with workshop or double garage. But then I know how much I would want to change nearly everything about any given house/shop combo so it suits our needs and I neither have the time or income to support that desire.

In the mean time, one car at a time, as and when I can, and just try and survive

I know the feeling. My garage is a clusterf*ck right now. I have not worked on my project truck in the 3 years I've lived here. The situation is getting resolved though as my wife bought me a shed for the backyard. I shoveled and hauled 4,000 lbs of limestone yesterday and got the pad set up for it and it will be getting built next Tuesday. Once I can get all of my lawn stuff and other non-essential stuff out I can get started on wiring (currently only have 1 outlet in the garage total). Need to add several 110v outlets as well as atleast 1 220v for a welder. Hopefully I can get everything cleaned up and organized next week while Im off work.

Yep, there's times I think the front will never get done. It won't get worked on again till Spring, maybe longer if it doesn't quit raing here.

Sometimes, you have to step back and take a break for a few days.

Wow we are all in the same boat. I built the shell of my barn and placed a house full of items, a 30x40 worth of garage items and 3 cars in it while we built the house. Unfortunately the hardest part as some have mentioned is working around stuff that is now inside the shell.
I have been reminded by my better half that the hosue and other priorities come first but never lose sight that the barn is my escape and needs to remain fun. Take your time and try not to lose faith. Rushing only having to do it a second time is a great way to fall off the wagon.

The minute it's done....that is when I would most likly croak.......hence, my garage will never be done.

Mine is finished finaly. It has been four years since the permit was in my hand. The project also included improvements to the house and landscaping.

I did most of the work myself and often flet like you do. I enjoyed doing the electrical but that was the point where I thought, this thing is never going to be finished. I would work my *** off to get past one tough piece only to look ahead and see 10 more that were just as much of a challenge! My advice is don't take a break because it is so hard to get going again. Plug away at it one piece at a time and it will all come together.

The funny thing is now that it is done, I miss working on the building. It is very rewarding seeing the project come together and knowing that your sweat is what made it all happen.

My shop foundation was poured in May of 2009, and I am still trying to finish the inside, so yes, it seems like it will never be done.
Of course, I am only there for a couple of weeks at a time, three or four times a year, so it's hard to get a lot accomplished.

Misery loves company I guess. Two years almost to the day after I pulled the permit, my propane got hooked up and I declared the building portion done. Of course the garage is not done, my latest challenge is cleaning, organizing and putting away my tools and all the tools I inherited from my dad. After that comes the cabinets so I can put away the mass of car parts that I've accumulated and tripped over for the past two years. Then build the tire racks to get the 20 or so wheels/tires off the floor. I really don't know if it will ever end. I just hope I get to live long enough to actually use it to restore a car or two.

Mine is not done yet... but it is very useable as it is. I am lacking a ceiling w/insulation and a gable vent fan. I also have not finished doing the interior corrugated metal wainscoating. I have tried to to mine in phases. Once I start a phase I WILL finish it! I leave time between phases to work on other projects. YMMV.

I too am in the same boat as all of you that have posted. I didn't think we had that many unfinished garages on here. The end of January is the deadline as far as my permit running out. They are good for a year and I believe I pulled the permit in late January 2011. I'm not sure what happens after that I guess I need to go talk to the plan commission.

I did the rough electric inspection and started the insulation. Most of the insulation is done except the vaulted ceiling. Some drywall is hung but I have a ways to go on that. Then comes drywall finish, paint, and finish electrical, and finish plumbing. Obviously all that is not going to happen in the month of January so I'll have to see if I can get an extension or something.

Anyway, glad to see I am not the only one in the same boat!

I've just moved house and have a brick built "garage" that started life as a cowshed about 100 years ago. Needs the roof sorting (and possibly raising by three or four courses of brick to make it properly usable as the eave height is just too low to get my truck in) it has no electricity or water, a leaky roof, damp walls and uneven brick floors, two broken windows and very flimsy homemade doors.

All my **** is in boxes still from the move two weeks ago and I haven't had any real time to even have a temporary sortout, as I also have all the **** from the shed and greenhouse in there as well.

Same here. My 24 x 32 looks 'done' from the road,but there is no siding on the back. The inside is about 1/2 insulated,but it's all wired up and lighted (no real heat yet...just a space heater), so it's useable. I need to: finish up the insulation and then do the drywall. The loft upstairs is slated to be an apartment,and I hope to work at that a little at a time over the next 10 or 12 years so its ready to rent when I retire.

Getting the service entry wired up is a big step Atleast you will have electricity out there now! I got mine done the other day also, just waiting the for power company to run a new/separate airwire to my weatherhead

I had customers cars lined up at my shop before I even had power!!! I remember those days all too well!! But I eventually got it done and 11 years later I'm still doing little things here and there but it will always be a work in progress.
