picked them up at the pawn shop today. i got these 3/8s drive sockets with a no name impact swivel for $6. i think the sockets are neat as hell. there is no manufacturer name on them, only 18mm, 16mm, and 15mm. for reference, the 18mm is next to an x6 mac 18mm 3/8 standard length socket. oh yeah, they are twelve point. i just picked up a black colored snap on 3/8s u-joint on ebay for $10, so i thought these shallow sockets would be a perfect match. i should mention these only have drawer wear, the sockets appear to never have been used.

Oddly enough, only at pawn shops have I ever seen really shallow sockets like those. Test them out yet? Sure they are actually impact and not black-finished?

they definately arent impact grade, just that impact swivel is. they are only black. im a home mechainc so i have to wait until something breaks to test them out. but for $3? ****, i suppose. i can give them to the guys at the diesel shop down the road if i never use them. but i just thought those along with a ujoint would make a great combination for hard to reach stuff

So these sockets are common?

Low profile sockets are fairly common. They're great in tight spots but if the stud protrudes much past the nut you can't use them as the stud will push the ratchet and/or socket off.
The broaching is only as deep as the average nut then the square drive is there so there is no extra room for long threads.

i was thinking they could be used more so for bolts. great example- just the other day i was taking the distributor hold down bolt out of my truck to adjust it. on a chevy 350, it can be done with a wrench, but i got a 454 (year 2000) and there is not enough room for a wrench. but i was able to fit a 14mm u-joint socket on it. it wasnt my socket, so thats where i got the idea of getting these low pros and a u joint.

haven't seen a VCR in the last 10 years either.

You have to look at the details... Its a VCR / DVD Combo machine... They still sell them at Walmart, Kmart, and I think Sears!

OP I have seen sockets that shallow on a old Craftsman set my father had in the 1960s when I was a kid... They were a lot more robust than that as he used them to fix all our farm equipment and shop equipment and they never failed. My brother has them now and they are still going strong.

^ ^ This on both parts. The combo VCR/DVD allows a way to record those old VCR's over to DVD . . . plus play DVD's. :D

Short impacts are old school . . . but they still get the job done.

Those are the sockets that come with a serpentine belt wrench kit. Very low profile. Usually the kits only come with a few sizes, always 12pt.
