I oil my impacts while letting the comp tank drain - so about once a month give or take. They're right next to each other. [non-pro hobby shop]

I'm curious about the 3in1 comment(?) I use a drop or two of ATF but have used gun oil. It seems that 3in1 would be better than nothing.

Dodge 239 and 318 engines have slug problems and Amsoil even recommends 3k oil changes in them.

3 in 1 works just fine...as far as oil changes...every engine is different....look in your owners manual for FACTS or just follow your in dash oil life ind. I change the oil in my pickup every 5k. I have had Blackstone labs test the used oil several times to make sure its a safe int. and it is in fact. My impala and the wife’s caddy get it as the oil life indicator suggests. Typically between 6 and 10k. Engines are as clean as a whistle inside and out. I have seen chrysler 2.7's with regularly changed oil lock up due to poor oiling. Check out www.oilsludge.com about the chrysler and go to www.bobistheoilguy.com for real oil facts if your interested.

I oil my air tools every time I plug the line onto them. Is this overkill? Perhaps, but I have a couple thousand in air tools and the ones that take oil I oil, I dont see any harm in it, especially since our shop wont sport for an air dryer -_-

Cannot recall what, but several people were mentioning some type of air tool that didn't particularly like oil. Am thinking it may have been certain air hammers?

I have some air tools that are around 45 years old that get little to no oil and still work fine. I know I should oil them ocassionally but....I forget a lot. I did just have a new air ratched stick on my after only about 30 minutes of use. I didn't oil it when I first used it. Got it replaced under WTY. It should have had some oil in it from the factory anyways to protect it from people like me.

I oil mine before each use daily ... I probably over oil my air tools; I have a small puddle where my impact is after daily usage. :)

Impact here didn't see a drop of oil for the first year of it's life. Not a daily use tool, but pretty regularly. Been putting a few drops of air compressor oil in it about once a week now.

Slow car gets its oil changed every 8000 miles, fast car every 6000. Anything earlier is just wasted money.

Every once in a while, when I think about it, I load every one of the air tools with oil, and run them to blow the excess out, wipe them off, and put them away, Then I use them, off and on, for as much as several months, and do that again.

At work there are hundreds of air tools, company owned, that are used daily, all day long, with only a minimal amount of oil, and they run fine for years.

marvel does make their own air tool oil

pb blaster makes some kind of cleaner called "atc". almost everybody has an oil labeled air tool.

I have been using the "ATC" we get it at work. It says you can use it as a full time oil.
I have used ATF as well, MMO as well,
At home right now I am using sometimes 3 in 1 and sometimes ISO 32 Hyd. oil.

I oil mine daily. I work with guys that haven't put the first drop of oil into an air tool. Mine seem to hold up better.

Am i the only one who oil's his blow gun ?

Probably! I don't want to blow oil over everything. Plus, I've been known to use my blow gun to blow dirt off of me!

After seeing all the people who don't regularly oil their air tools, and others who mentioned condensation in their air systems, I'm reminded why I NEVER buy used air tools. You will never know whether they have been properly taken care of or not.

Even the condensation problem tells me people are not properly removing moisture from their air system and that will destroy an air tool VERY quickly.

These tools are not designed to be abused. Just my 2-cents.

Shop I work at the tools never get oiled and quite offten the water trap is full and you can blast about 5-10 sec of water through them. We have quite a few air grinders that have had this treatment longer than i've worked there (10 years) and they are still going.

any one oil their blow guns ?

When I worked at the Costco Tire Shop, my first manager oiled the pneumatic vacuum :willy_nil

I oil my air tools before every use. Five drops in that bad boy every time. When done, I put three drops, plug it back in, run it for three seconds and put them away. Overkill? maybe but I've never had an air tool take a dump on me in 10+ years.

I am with you about buying used air tools, just getting someone else's headaches and with good shopping pricing on new is very competitive. I see some body guys run without oil, I am careful in DA and straight line, just a drop or 2 and blast it thru. I also have seen tools run a long time without oil, if I think of it and use something regular my habit is to give a couple drops when finished and bump a bit of air thru.
Another thing about used tools, its one thing to repair a widget or loose screw but I am not buying replacement parts for a 3/8 air ratchet, the stuff lasts about half as long after the repair as new, can replace the thing for 120 clams with no labor, no parts and have new in my hand almost instant. I am all for saving money but they are usually well worn at that point, not just the broken piece that made it stop but the whole thing. There is a limit and usually that has well earned its keep and depreciated at that point.

I see on another forum where there was a comment about the way someone treated a welding machine,,, yes, it might have lasted a bit longer had someone waxed it daily and change oil weekly but the cost would have went beyond its replacement, its one thing for a hobby type to fuss over it but if its doing real pay work there is a point to toss it and get new. Lots of factors to consider though. Most boil down to cost.

Wow, what a diversity! It shows the quality difference on your tools. The older ones can take a lot more abuse w/o oil then newer tools or other brands. What about a teflon based lube or the like? Or one that would coat and possibly inpregnate the metal and keep it from disaster. I use to have a product called Friction Terminator that did just that in engines.

I go 25k to 50k on oil changes depending on engine and Blackstone test results. Amsoil is what I use.

Thanks, JASTECH

No,I oil them once in a while.I just got back my Snap On air ratchet back from the rebuilder and added oil right away just before I used it.I do have a couple air tools don't use oil,are oil less and oil will ruin the seals inside. My Stanley Bostitch angle finish nailer and brad nailer are oil less requiring no oil at all.

Used lots of die grinders in vacuum coating machines to grind coating off the walls. Removed every trace of oil before even starting, any oil out the exhaust would take months to pump out of a vacuum chamber.

I don't use my air tools very often except for my 3/8" impact. I oil it once a week (6 drops) and I oil the other tools every time I use them, since It can be weeks on end.

I'm 37 and I've never seen a drop of oil go through any of my Pop's air tools. Many of which have been used extensively. Having said that, we set up a compressor, minus frl at work for a construction project. After a month of hammering in structural (A325) bolts two brand new IR impacts were toast. Just a fwiw.

I oil at the end of every day except blow guns and sanders. I know alot of guys who oil when their guns start to bind up and still the IR's will take it for like 10 years every day. Oil every day will make them stay stronger over time. I use Dexron ATF.

I worked for this guy one time, and My gun wasn't too good anymore, so I'd use his sometimes, and I would always Oil it before I used it, thinking I was doing "Good" things.
He saw me oil it a few times, a month or so later he said " you oiled my Impact, I never oil it, now I am having trouble with it.
I said well your supposed to. Don't know if it was coincidence, or if I messed it up by finely oiling it.

I oil mine rarely and they seem to be working well with the exception of my Blue-Point air ratchet. I discussed it withmy Snap-On man and I'm gonna tear it apart and try to free up the things he told me to look at. If unsuccessful, I'll send it off with him for a rebuild.

My impact guns are going strong with only occasional oiling-BUT and it's a big but (cue the Sir Mix-a-lot!) I do have an automatic drain and have had it for a long time, there is rarely much water in my airlines (in spite of my using nylon lines) and the only time I see it is on extended uses with die grinders and the like. I should probably drain the tank completely now that I said this though, but it is getting colder and dryer out.
