I have been very fortunate too only work at two places and had very good luck at each, they replaced missing or broken tools at both but one old guy engraved his tools (*** HOLE) when he handed me one to use he made sure I saw it as well. He was a wise old ***** married millions come to find out. ;)

Haven't had any trouble with thieves personally. While I'm at work my box stays open -- at least one drawer half-closed/rags hanging/parts half-disassembled -- all day long, on lunch and on break. Me and two other guys borrow each other's stuff from time to time, never had an issue. I trust them. But that's only my shift. The rest of the time, it stays locked tight. I even lock my parts away so guys on other shifts don't steal the ones I've spent time rebuilding. Over the weekend a cleaning crew comes in. They've got a 'reputation'. Our boxes find their way into the locked supply room on Friday afternoons...

A number of years ago I took a job as the lead mechanic in a marina, I trusted the guys I worked with and never locked my box, the shop was locked nights and weekends and only 2 or 3 people had a key. This was never a problem at places I'd worked at in the past because everyone I worked with had similar quality tools and respected each others stuff. Well after several weeks of coming back after the weekend and finding my tools on my bench that was allways left clean I started to believe the stories about the owner "borrowing" tools.
I went over to his box and saw several of my tools in there and asked him how they got there. His excuse was that he was the only one around with orange handled Snap On tools, When I asked about the three marks ground into them (all mine do), He replied that all his tools had three marks in them. The only tools with marks in his box were mine.
That was the last time I believed anything he said.

I'd look for a new job and when I get one I would call the cops to come down on the ******* you work for.

A question for you guys who work with a lot of mechanics. Do you lock your box when you go to lunch or a test drive? I don't at my place but we only have 3 guys in the shop.

I lock my box and cart everytime I go to lunch and testdrives if my neighbor isn't going to stay in his bay. And he does the same w/ me. I work w/ 14 other tech's and it's not them I'm worried about, it's the porters and make ready guys who change every month. We have had issues w/ them before so better safe than sorry. Also for some reason my service manager allows anyone to walk threw our shop and yard so we have sales guys, metal and tire recyclers, people selling food and what not, so again better safe than sorry.

I found something that's ideal for marking tools. Can of hairspray that becomes visible under a black light.... that would make it VERY easy to find your tools in someones elses box.. or at the pawn shop etc.. you could even use it to spray your name on your boxes etc.. or just spray a couple of the drawer fronts.

It's sold at party stores etc
