Hello. This is the garage me and my friend own. We are both 20 and love working on cars. I currently have 3 projects cars so I'm constantly in the garage.

We got the main garage almost a year ago and it was filled to the brim with contractor **** and just general junk. It took us about 2 weeks to get it all cleaned out. Regretably, I don't have any pictures from when it was filled up. Trust me it was garbage.

Additionally, the garage had no electrical in it so we had to run that (ran it ourselves under the supervision of an electrician we know). We made sure we had plenty of outlets and we have two 220v outlets.

So what I really need is help from you guys on how to get a bit more organized. What we have now is functional but it's really just a lot of stuff everywhere. We have a couple of snap-on toolboxes that we got from a friend who works at a military surplus store - we got these as payment for paint correction on his massive chevy duramax. And we have some cheap countertop in the corner. The garage is 17 ft long, 21 ft wide, and 8 ft high.

So onto the pictures:

made from 1/2 in galvanized pipe. Was expensive to make but it does a wonderful job of giving us light.

As you can see, the inside is unfinished cinderblock. Floor needs to be sealed badly (after cleaning of course!) We want to go with some sort of super hard clear sealer. Something that can handle tools being dropped and jack stands and abuse. Any suggestions are welcome.

So there's really no shelving here. There's about a foot and a half of space between the garage door and the wall so we might just install a bunch of shelving here? Not sure because we don't want it to be too tight on the side when we have a car in there. Also there's some BEAUTIFUL wall art we found on the side of road. Also one of the guys that came over spray painted cats on the wall because who doesn't love cats :lol_hitti

And then there's that random light there. I have no idea what my friend was thinking when he mounted it there :headscrat

Back wall

We just got that window unit there. Not fully installed yet. 15k btu it blows cold which is good for the blistering florida heat! on the side you can see a ls1 build we're working on! Piece of plywood used to be where the window unit is now and the whiteboard used to be mounted to the plywood. Out the back door is a 60 gal kobalt compressor. There's a 3 foot wide overhang out the back that could be used for something but right now it's filled with **** that needs to be cleaned. We need a truck though to haul most of it away.

Back right corner

So this is where we spend a lot of our time. The right hand side of the garage. We have a beautiful lounge chair that we found with that piece of art work... eventually it'll have to go cause it's WAY too huge. Kobalt work bench, and then that crappy countertop system I was talking about. On the top of the countertop we have an old wilton that is half unfinished. Need to continue stripping the enamel off and then re-spray it. Also you'll see one of the snap-on boxes. It's where we store our less used mechanic tools. Most of the electrical stuff in there as well. The pressure washer in the foreground there is normally stored out back by the compressor but we were using it to wash a mercedes we had just finished painted the day before

Shelving that has most of the detailing stuff on it to wash and do paint correction on cars. Also some painting supplies and sandpaper. Up above is a shelf with the headers for that LS1

The "good" snap-on. Not actually any better but we store all the sockets, hammers, pliers, ratchets, wrenches, dremel kit, etc. in this one.

SO NOW let's talk about the second gargae which will become our future workshop. Metal working, parts cleaning, welding, pipe bending, milling, etc. etc. It's a 10.5 x 16.5 x 7 garage. has a single piece garage door in the front that slides up (need to get a rolling one) and it's filled with **** the same way the other garage was. I am currently working on a blueprint to get this one all working but once again we need a truck to haul most of this away.

THE PLAN is to run electrical and water. It used to have electrical but it got wiped out after a hurricane. It'll have 2 ft deep work bench on the left and right wall. The corner closest to the garage door on the right hand side will be where there will be a hand washing station and a parts cleaner next to it. Back wall will have a lot of bigger machinery. Belt sander, band saw, drill press, and a pipe bender. Cabinets above and bigger stuff can be stored under the bench.

Would love to hear any ideas for how to organize this place! Another cool thing is that the rafters/trusses are made from 8ftx1ftx3in planks from cyprus. THEY ARE HUGE!

PREPARE YOUR EYES (I apologize in advance):

So here's how the two garages sit currently. Bad one on the left and the usable one on the right. There's a space in the middle that some time in the future we'd LOVE to build another garage and connect the 2 (THE DREAM). Middle one would have pour for a lift, be 12 ft tall and deeper then the current one.

That was really long winded.

Hope you all can help out a bit though.

The garage wasn't cleaned at all before I took the pictures... that's pretty much the state of chaos after painting a car and doing maintenance on our cars at the same time.

Hi there,

My advice for that wall that has the engines and stuff against it is to build a 24" deep taller work bench so you can still slide stuff under it like an engine or trans... Build it sturdy so you do not need many legs to the floor, makes it easier to store stuff. Then use either onld kitchen cabinets or build shelving about that 1" deep so they do not get in the way of the work bench...

Then in another spot setup a lower workbench, it is nice to have both a tall and low bench...

Look into folding workbenches and "slatwall", as ways to help keep your space functional...

I have a bunch of cool things in my garage that I also use for working on cars, so have a look at my thread and you may gain a few ideas...

Wait, I'm a bit confused since you didn't mention a house. You guys just bought a plot of land and built a garage on it?

Looks like a great space to hang out and work on some stuff... Being only 20 this is quite an accomplishment. Hope the projects go well, and you guys are working safely.
Cheers.

Looks like they actually have two garage/small shop buildings. Not the sort of thing that you see on a lot with out a residence.

In any case, you have to admire a couple of 20 year olds with the smarts and ability to buy and renovate their own workspaces.

Looking forward to seeing progress reports and pictures. We like pictures.

I would definitely build shelving along the walls, with enough space to store motors below. The lower shelf could be tall enough for the small roller box to go under so tools are right by the work area

I'm confused also. So whose house or garage is this? Is this a business venture for you guys? Do you guys have your own tools each or community tools? My main concern is what happens if this friendship goes bad and one leaves whose is whose stuff? I don't see nothing wrong with having a place where you guys can work but even the best friendships have bad patches and goes south.
