"Everything to have" list

A lot of people are planning their garages (size/layout) on here. I've searched lists on the forum with a few results but no exhaustive list.

If someone wants to consider "everything" to be able to work on cars and various projects, what would they need. This list can be used for people to account for space in their garage because I'm sure there are large tools/equipment we don't think about from the get go..

Cabinets/toolboxes/parts bins, etc (includes all that can fit in there)

Air Compressor
Angle/Corner notcher
Band Saw
belt/disk sander
Brake
Drill Press
English wheel
Mini-Mill
Mini-Lathe
Press
Sand Blast Cabinet
Shear
Slip roll
Table saw
Throatless shear
Tube bender
Vibratory Polisher
Welder / plasma/oxy cutter
Wire wheel

Anything else?

Added from your suggestions:
Anvil
Engine Stand & Jack
Exhaust system/fan
Floor Jack & Jack Stand
Fridge
In-floor anchors
Lift
Metal racks
Parts Washer / Cleaning Station
Recycling/trash bins
Tire changer
Tire balancer
Tire racks
Valve grinder
Workbench & welding table

[Edit] I'm obviously talking about equipment that takes up floor space or that needs significant work to get in (like exhaust fans), not hand tools and stuff you put in cabinets [/edit]

You've probably only missed 10 to 12 thousand items on your list. Those "various projects" encompass a large set of skills and interests.

Before I'd get anything off that list I'd get a tool box, And A quality socket, wrench and ratchet set. Then various screwdrivers, pliers, etc. Then and air compressor and impact. Whilst having adequate lighting, followed by jacks and jack stands. To top it off, a good fridge and a radio.

Has anyone ever put together a DYI starter list? I know everyone uses their space differently, but it would be cool to have a dynamic list for a growing shop.

DYI starter list, in my eyes
Three ratchets, 20 wrenches, good socket set. Of course covering them three main drives sae and standard as almost any vehicle from any manufacture has a mix of both. The screw drivers, at least a 2.5 ton Jack, preferably with jackstands, and an oil filter wrench or two.

And, a place to do it all with. Lol

ahah yeah, but there is already a hundred hand tool lists in here... so everything that fits in storage spaces is not in there. I can link to countless posts where people list all kind of small speciality hand tools... That you can add later, you don't really need to account floor space for them.

I was making a list of stuff that takes floor space.

sorry I thought it was obvious;)

WTF is wrong with you guys....You guys have failed to mention the most important thing in a garage...bikini calendar or car calendar. Isn't a garage a place for testosterone? Get some testosterone friendly stuff in there other than tools.

Well, that's the end of this thread.
Once Herb posts that avatar pic, no more thinking happens.
I had to get someone else to type this for me . . .

Parts washer, carb cleaner, paint gun cleaning station. Eye washout safety station. Fire extinguishers, bar, tv, stereo, there are a lot of things that could be added to take up space. It depends on what your hobbies are and how deep you want to get into the. If into all DIY car restoration, then commercial sewing machine and cutting tables etc would be needed.

thanks for feedback, I've added most to the list, a calendar is not taking up space so not in the list.. if you put a real size doll, then I guess it takes up space;)

Still don't see a roller tool box added to your list yet, although it was mentioned earlier.

Thinking about the stuff that takes up floor space in my shop, how about:
a hydraulic press or arbor press
Engine crane
Engine stand
transmission jack
floor jack
Jack stands
Oil drain
Welding bench/table
Paint racks
Metal stock racks
Tire racks
Full size lathe
Full size milling machine
Valve grinder
Brake lathe
Storage cabinets for paint, lubricants, sealants
Tire changer
Tire balancer
Bolt bins
Motorcycle/ATV lift
Gantry crane

100 ton iron worker, wouldnt be with out mine. But then again i dont have a 4 post lift like allot of guys here. Your tools are going to be dictated by budget, skill set, spatial constraints, and project typologies. Most guys i know aquire tools slowly as their skill set and budget allow. So many guys i know think that owning a welder makes you a weldor. If it was only that simple.

Press was in the list, toolbox not because of cabinets (basically, you use ones/many full wall length for all cabinets/parts bin/ storage) but you're right, even with cabinet most have a toolbox on rollers.

I'd ditch the mini-mill and mini-lathe and go for a nice 9"-10" Lathe. I'm partial to South Bend because of parts availability, but a well cared for Atlas works too. With a milling attachment you can do 99% of what a mini-mill is capable of.

wow, had to google the milling attachment.. that neat. it can almost make a press drill also, although it would be hard to place large parts sideways

i've seen packed to the walls garage/shop that couldnt change a door knob, and others with a bare minimum that can do whatever they need to do...

it's all about perspective, and the willingness to what what has to be done, even without the "proper" tools/equipment.

One thing I finally purchased after 13 years of struggling doing things by myself, dangerous things like using a circular saw one handed, ripping boards down, is a Jaw Horse. Man, I love that thing! It is probably my most favorite go to "tool" now. I don't know how I lived without it all this time. I would absolutely add one of these to your list. I also use it for cutting pipes off of catalytic convertors- no more sitting on the ground for me!

and, well, I'm almost speechless, but thought I might change Brooke, for her. Opinions?

Of course you were talking about the tub design and tile choice.

Those stainless steel faucet fixtures are NICE!! ;)
