Anyone have one of these 7 1/4" metal chop saws? I just ordered one as I like the portability & 7 1/4" blade size. I don't like that it uses a 20mm arbor so there really aren't any 6 or 7" abrasive blades that will fit without an adapter. I think this can be reall handy for smaller work that still requires some precision. This may make cutting up smaller pieces a little easier, especially if I can use an 045 wheel on harder steel where a bandsaw doesn't always work.

Why not just jump to the 14" ?

Personally I would consider a benchtop band saw similar to Femi, Klutch, Kaka

Evo makes a good product, with these it's mostly about flex from the base

I have their small dry cut saw. It's really handy for smaller material and it's cheaper than the abrasive saw.

I've still got two 14" abrasive saws but it's been years since I've dug one out. Band saws and dry cut saws have replaced them for my needs.

I have a couple 14" cold cut saws and a few bandsaw, my thinking is portability. I like i can take this to the work and make cuts and adjustments on the spot. It just arrived so once I get it set up and dialed in a have a few good projects to test it out.

Abrasive blades have different rpm requirements

Evolution 14" cold cut/toothed blade chop saw: 1500rpm

Average 14" abrasive chop saw: 3900rpm

If you put an abrasive blade on a 1500rpm saw you won't be happy with the results.

Don't know my exact model & its too damn cold to go out & check, but I have a very similar one. I'm just a hobby guy so it fits my needs just fine. Its small and on a shelf under my workbench and easy enough to pull out when I need it.

Why not a 14"? Cause I will never need it. My squares or angles are never bigger than 2".

It actually cuts quite well with an abrasive blade, the saw spins at 4200 rpm. I just cut an old hardened vise jaw, nice clean square cut. This gives the saw the ability to cut some harder materials that you can't with a toothed blade.

So far I like it, sturdy base and the fence is cast and solid. Light weight with a smaller footprint and up to 2" cut capacity. Obviously need more than a few test cuts, but it seems we'll built and even came with an extra set of brushes.

I stand corrected. Obviously it's possible with the smaller saw. We have the 14" Evo at work - somebody but an abrasive wheel on it and it bogged down immediately.

A 14" saw spinning at 1,500 rpm is about 5,500 SFM. A 7" saw spinning at 4,200 RPM is about 7,500 SFM. Not crazy different.

I completely missed that it shipped with a toothed blade and you wanted to use an abrasive blade on it. I was thinking it was a little abrasive cut off saw.

The one I posted a link to is about the same size (8" blade) and it's really handy to have a small light portable saw for smaller material cuts. I also picked up this little Dewalt miter saw stand and mounting brackets.

Makes for a nice portable stand to use it on.

Interesting that you are using an abrasive blade, you must be after the form factor of this saw rather then the performance of the OE carbide toothed blade?

Glad you found something that works. Personally I would hate going back to abrasive blades. A good carbide band saw blade will do a lot of work

funaistuff might be inaccurate

136% is nothing to sniff at. Anyway, I was wrong and I admitted to that.
With the 14" saw we have at work the switch from OE blade to abrasive made it nearly unusable.

If I was doing the cutting I'd prefer to be using the toothed chop saw blade. If someone else in the shop was using it while I'm in the neighbouring bay... I'd prefer they outsourced it to another shop. The noise difference is crazy.(again in my experience with the basic 14") .

My point is that you were not wrong. Whether a 14" blade or a 7-1/4" blade, the SFM is still much lower than you would expect for an abrasive blade. I don't know why you would want to use an abrasive blade at all, particularly on a saw that was not designed for it.

Cutting up a bunch of small hardened steel parts seems to cut faster and easier with an 045 wheel. No issue using an abrasive blade in the saw, the cut quality is great.

And as a plus, you cut and annealed all in one operation!
